The outbound part works fine...when I get back to the point where I return home, I cant get it to retrace my path....the out and back tool just draws a straight line and the loop tool launches an endless loop.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but when I return home from a route (or go by a spot I've already run), the cursor does not like this and "Notes" pops up.  I'm surprised this is so difficult, as most people would like to END where they STARTed.  Any advice?  Maybe I just need someone to show me!

    Bump.

I have been looking for a way to do this for a long time.  I end up mapping two runs most of the time, one out and back and two for the loop.

it would be great if we could map a route out and 'anchor' a point so that you can loop, return to your anchor, and then 'back to home'

I ran into the same problem, it would be really nice to have this resolved in an easier way!

I too am frustrated by this problem.  Almost every ride I do has a retrace at some point.  I just gave up on creating maps.  Has anyone contacted support to ask if their is a solution?

I attempted to use MMR after seeing it promoted at the TDF.  I immediately ran into this problem. When I attempt to retrace a portion of my route on the way back, I get endless "Notes" popups.  I also seem to get false portions of my route where it looks as if I ride a mile, turn around, ride back, and then turn around again.  The first route I created indicated 55 miles for a 35 mile ride.

I also seem to get an extraordinary number of white squares (markers?) on my route (which I believe are causing the "Notes" popups).  When I start the route from my home, I go about 1/4 mile up my own street -- this results in 6 white squares.  In some sections less than 1/4 mile long I will get 10 of these.

I tried this in Firefox, but the results were the same.  This is fairly basic stuff, so I'm surprised it doesn't work.  I won't use this tool in it's current form, even for free.

If anyone gets answers to this, I'd sure like to know.  I can't use this site because most of my routes double back on roads I started on.  Frustrating.

Same frustration, many of my runs/rides are "lollipop loops " aka "balloon loops" with a loop on one end of an out-and-back...  Any moderators around here care to help us all out??

I have been hugely frustrated by this exact problem!  It seems like it would be a very common problem, and it drives me crazy that the "out and back" button doesn't follow the roads.  Really obvious flaw in the program, and I certainly WILL NOT ever pay for using the site if they can't fix this problem.

I have managed to map several "lollipop loop" runs by persisting... when it adds an extra loop in the middle of the run I just hit the "undo" button, but it is challenging to click on the "out" section of the run without bringing up the "notes" dialogue box.  It seems like it works if you do it quickly or sneakily, thus not giving the "notes" time to pop up.

I wish I would have read these forums before I ponyed up my six bucks for a bronze subscription. Just glad I didn't elect to pay for an entire year! I'm having this same issue, too. Very aggravating! I hope they are able to address these issues soon. This site has great promise to be a wonderful tool for the cycling community. But IMO, it's not quite there yet.

all you have to do is zoom in on the street and click wear there is a spot with no box on it.  even if it is on the same path you just went on. If you are trying to map a turn in the route just click right before the turn and then after the turn not on the cornor itself.

No, ryan77lilly, you miss the point.  The notes get completely jumbled up if you retrace any part of the route.  Zooming in is no help.

I reported this some time ago and the response was that they are aware that there is a problem.  It's still screwed up.  Example:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/il/851125135162374954

Retracing the route screws up the OUTBOND notes which are correct before you retrace, and fails to add the returning noted properly.  It's trivially obvious that the notes are messed up and it really should not be difficult to fix.

The programming on this site really stinks.  It was pretty good years back, but I suppose it's outsourced to you-know-where.

I have been trying to find a work around for the same problem as outlined above including turning off auto notes. I have not found a solution. VERY FRUSTRATING!! I will likely seek a refund of my one year subscription.

I agree with 3by2speed this "bug" is probably going to be the one that get's me to cancel my subscription. When looping back over previously routed segments, notes get totally messed up. And, trying to edit them is a major frustration. I noticed in this month's MapMyRide newsletter that neither the SF or Boston maps had notes. And both had loop-backs. Really, the maps are nice. But, I need the turn by turn notes.

Check the workaround I spelled out to overcome this shortcoming:

dominicus provides "an INCREDIBLY PAINFUL workaround" (his words, not mine).  Less painful:  "If you rely on auto-notes and if your route retraces any segment, even for only one road, split it into two routes that don't retrace anything."

If you need a single cue sheet for the whole route, use a spreadsheet to combine the two segments.

Another walkaround, it works in firefoks. When you get to the turning back point go to the firefoks Tools menu, Options... and select Content. Unselect the Enable JavaScript option and OK. You won't see the red track of the route but it appears when you eanble JavaScript again.

Major flaw in the system that affects almost all users of mapmyrun and mapmyride - one that should have been anticipated by the makers -  any clue as to when and if it will be resovled?  It has prevented me from paying for any upgrade.

I've done a bunch of routes and this used to be very annoying, but I figured out how to do it.  What I do is zoom in and click on the side of the street.  You can either click slightly off the road (but not on another road), or you can click on the edge of the road.  You may have to zoom more than you would like, but it does work.

I use Firefox 3.5.3.  I've done this successfully with IE as well.

None of this resolves the problem that automatically recorded turn notes get totally messed up if any part of the route goes through any intersection more than once.  I have noted this several times in this discussion, to no avail.  I also noted that at least two other sites that use the same technology do not have this problem.  See also next discussion item "Notes on overlapping routes don't work."
