Bump.
I have been looking for a way to do this for a long time. I end up mapping two runs most of the time, one out and back and two for the loop.
it would be great if we could map a route out and 'anchor' a point so that you can loop, return to your anchor, and then 'back to home'
I attempted to use MMR after seeing it promoted at the TDF. I immediately ran into this problem. When I attempt to retrace a portion of my route on the way back, I get endless "Notes" popups. I also seem to get false portions of my route where it looks as if I ride a mile, turn around, ride back, and then turn around again. The first route I created indicated 55 miles for a 35 mile ride.
I also seem to get an extraordinary number of white squares (markers?) on my route (which I believe are causing the "Notes" popups). When I start the route from my home, I go about 1/4 mile up my own street -- this results in 6 white squares. In some sections less than 1/4 mile long I will get 10 of these.
I tried this in Firefox, but the results were the same. This is fairly basic stuff, so I'm surprised it doesn't work. I won't use this tool in it's current form, even for free.
I have been hugely frustrated by this exact problem! It seems like it would be a very common problem, and it drives me crazy that the "out and back" button doesn't follow the roads. Really obvious flaw in the program, and I certainly WILL NOT ever pay for using the site if they can't fix this problem.
I have managed to map several "lollipop loop" runs by persisting... when it adds an extra loop in the middle of the run I just hit the "undo" button, but it is challenging to click on the "out" section of the run without bringing up the "notes" dialogue box. It seems like it works if you do it quickly or sneakily, thus not giving the "notes" time to pop up.
No, ryan77lilly, you miss the point. The notes get completely jumbled up if you retrace any part of the route. Zooming in is no help.
I reported this some time ago and the response was that they are aware that there is a problem. It's still screwed up. Example:
http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/il/851125135162374954
Retracing the route screws up the OUTBOND notes which are correct before you retrace, and fails to add the returning noted properly. It's trivially obvious that the notes are messed up and it really should not be difficult to fix.
The programming on this site really stinks. It was pretty good years back, but I suppose it's outsourced to you-know-where.
Check the workaround I spelled out to overcome this shortcoming:
dominicus provides "an INCREDIBLY PAINFUL workaround" (his words, not mine). Less painful: "If you rely on auto-notes and if your route retraces any segment, even for only one road, split it into two routes that don't retrace anything."
If you need a single cue sheet for the whole route, use a spreadsheet to combine the two segments.
I've done a bunch of routes and this used to be very annoying, but I figured out how to do it. What I do is zoom in and click on the side of the street. You can either click slightly off the road (but not on another road), or you can click on the edge of the road. You may have to zoom more than you would like, but it does work.
I use Firefox 3.5.3. I've done this successfully with IE as well.
