Do you have any tips in reaching 10,000 steps each day?

Here are some things that have helped me this past year:

    • Parking as far away from stores, etc as possible so that I have to walk the distance.
    • Walking for a determined amount of time each morning (for me it's one hour) and each night (for me it's 1/2 hr), besides your every day walking.
    • Wearing a pedometer all day and writing down the end number before bed each night.
    • Going with a friend to window shop around town or in the mall.
    • Taking the stairs rather than the elevator.
    • Having an accountability partner who is working to reach the same goal.

It's rather exciting looking for every opportunity to walk rather than using the car, elevator, escalator, etc.  Turning it into somewhat of a game seems to help me.

    Walk On!

We have a 10K step challenge going at work. 8 week program, 4 person teams reporting to the coordinator each Monday. Below is a link to my teams stats from last week. It shows all of our steps, and the activities used to get the steps.

I like to take a trip around the grocery store before I start shopping, I go up and down each isle and I make a final lap before leaving the store. I also park the furthest spot away. I walk in place while brushing my teeth, I also walk if I am talking on the phone. I use the restroom furthest away anywhere I am at. A few more tips to add to your great list! Kari

I recently started distance walking.  I am an attorney and I spend most of my day at a desk, on the phone or on the computer.  I found the only way I could get 10,000 steps a day, is if I set out for a deliberate walk in the evening.  In the beginning, I would walk to make sure that I got up to the 10,000 steps.  At this point, it is quite common for me to walk over 5 miles in the evening, alone!
