    kdogg -- Hey. My best 5k time is around 17:30, but that was in highschool. I haven't really run too many 5k races since then since we did 8k in college. Right now I'm trying to get back into the shape I was in my freshman year when I did a 28:26 8k on a very hilly course. I am currently running in the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8 shoes that I got from a running store I live nearby. I'm taking a couple days off to take care of my knee and try a 5k on the 26th to see what I can do for time. In terms of the ITB, I was a little inconsistent in the beginning of my training, and I think I pushed myself a little too hard in the last couple weeks in terms of upping the miles a lot and going hard on my speed workouts.

     

    Took the day off today. I'll be back at it Friday.

    Another 35 mile bike ride this evening and another day of putting off getting a second opinion on surgery for my knee. The riding feels great, but sooner or later I think I need to deal with the knee definitively.

    I opted for a hill workout instead of a fartlek today. No real reason for the switch other than i just wanted to. So i did 2 sets of 8 (hard up, jog down) on a ~250-300m hill... or should i say the 250-300m hill, its pretty flat here lol.

    elbeeble- i had the exact same IT problem caused by the exact same thing a few years ago. I decided i would run through it and it just kept getting worse. I let it get really bad and I limped along on all my runs. Eventually i started getting in the pool and very slowly it started coming back. I knew it would have been better to take a few days of early than risk a serious injury later, but i still tried to train through it. I guess it was because I was an incoming freshman and i felt i had something to prove and i didnt want to come in out of shape. Anyway, your post just got me thinking about how its so hard to tell if you can train through an injury or if you should rest.

    chiggy - Yeah, I've pretty much decided to hold off on my marathon in the fall and rest my knee. Fortunately, all my close freinds are physical therapy students, so I can take advantage of some free advice. Looks like its going to be the swimming pool for me for a bit.

    Decided for something different today. Just thought I would attack teh stairs at work. Over too quickly, but not quick enough!!! Will try to do it regularly when I get the chance. The ride home was quick again. Have been really fast this week. Had a bloke suck my wheel the whole way home which I dont mind. Nice tail wind helped make up for all the traffic lights we got

    hill workout last night x 6 hard up and walk down -just over 3.4 miles total.  thought my heart was going to pop out of my mouth!  slightly easier than my last hill workout, so must slowwwwwly be getting better/stronger. 

    rest today and 10km fun run London on Sunday.

    2.3 miles for me today. I can't believe my apparent progress. A week ago I struggled to do 1.5min running and now I have doubled that easily to doing 3mins. It's not a lot I know, but for me it's amazing. Am managing to do 3 lots of 3min running with a 2min walk inbetween plus 2min runs to get going and warm up.

    Also....I got stopped today, and asked out! Has that ever happened to anyone else?

    xxemmaxx - great job!!! I just started running back in April and I couldn't run for more than 1 minute at a time. when I do my long runs I try to keep with a consistent 3 running to 1 walking. The other night I pushed myself to see how long I could run without a walk break and I went for 15:40!! You'll be there sooner than you think - just be consistent with your training.

     and you go girl! hope your date goes well. i've never been asked out while running, but my husband does give me 'the look' more often since i've been running. Wink

    Seemed to have pulled up ok after sundays long run. midweek hilly run felt good. Nothing fast but controlled.

    Everyone is seems to be improving well. gfinkelde - that'll be a great time to aim for. I don't think I could keep up 4.30 pace for more than about 12 or 13km at the moment.

     aldiara88 sounds like you have the right attitude with your walk run combination. If you can now run 15 mins non stop you are well on your way.... I think you are right...Consistency really is the key. I haven't been doing any "fast" runs of late, but just by shear milage increases I am getting faster and doing the same runs easier.

    Hey LexB-- Thanks for the great advice. I need to focus on the training and stop worrying about the weight.  I do feel much stronger and I can run much further than when I started out. So, that is a huge, huge plus.  

     Today was a great workout day. I had a burst of energy and combined  a 3.5mi run with some serious strength training.  I know I will be hurting tomorrow.  But my plan is to take a nice hot bath and rest tomorrow.  I need a break.

    Going to shoot for a long run either Sat or Sun. 

    xxemmaxx:  Keep cranking along.  It is surprising how adding on more miles gets easier.

    Rest day today. I'll do an easy 4 to 7 tomorrow depending on how I feel. 5K race on Saturday. I am curious how fast I can go for a short distance since I have been focused on longer runs and slower paces. Have not REALLY pushed for a short distance in a long time. The race has a 3/4 mile downhill early so I want to be careful not to pound myself going too fast down to avoid an injury. The race ends with a mile long steady uphill. My goal is 22:54 which is what I ran this course in 2003 the last time I ran it.  Then all my running was 4 miles and under (maybe 3-4 times a week starting about 3 mos. before the race) and always pushing for time (each run I was usually trying to be faster than the day before). So, will all the long run training with little speed work result in a faster time in a short race? Also, I am 5 years older now. Anybody what to venture a guess??

    Rest day for me as well. Should be 6 miles tomorrow and 13 on Saturday.

    Rememberly: I'll venture a guess. I think if you push yourself for speed on the 5k, I think you'll be around 21:15. Maybe even a bit faster. Your pace runs seem to be about equal to mine (8:15 or so). My last "speed" run for 3 miles (not quite 5k) was 20:08. I think you'll surprise yourself. Post after the race and let us know how  you do!

    10/5 double today. I guess I injured my ankle sometime yesterday or the day before, because it HURT today on my morning run. Seems like an ankle sprain or something. Anyway, I RICE'ed it and felt better during my 2nd run. Should be okay for tomorrows easy run and then Saturdays race. 

    rememberly - long slow distance training helps you on all of your running (well from the mile on up). I'm running 1600m races now (on super high mileage, but almost no faster paced running) faster than when I was doing two speed workouts a week on much lower mileage. There are a few other variables in my personal anecdote, but I am convinced that higher mileage will lead to steady improvement over any distance.

    10 today, my knee hurt again today so I'll have to keep an eye on it

    I'm going home tomorrow for the weekend. I am so tired of living in the city, Lubbock isn't exactly big, pop. 200k, but there isnt even a stop light where i'm from so it seems big to me. I desperately need to get back to the country for a bit. You know so I can see my dogs, ride my horse, fish, and i guess I might see my parents too ;). I may go out to some of my old HS running trails.

    7 miles in 63 minutes. 5K race tomorrow. I hope Junkie99 and KDogg are correct and I get a PR as a result of my long distance training.

    6 miles in just over 48 minutes.

    Rememberly, I think kdogg is right. I've yet to do "speed work" in my runs. Last year when I was doing almost weekly 5k's, I knocked my time from 25:00 to a PR of 20:24. (and I'm about your age). So go kick some butt for the older guys.

    are males naturally faster than females?  I can't imagine being able to do 6/7 miles at 8/9mins per mile.  for that sort of distance my speed is approx 10.30per mile.

    Remeberley i too think you will be very pleasantly surprised,.i really increased my mileage from my half  marthon to when i ran the 5k and didnt do any speed work,. i agree with k-dog because my pace for the half was 9:17, then the 5 k i ran was a whopping 7:26,. my guess is a sweet 21:07,.good luck..let us know,. and

    brooklyngrrl, i started running a year ago april,at 257lbs,.currently i am at 190lb,. when i started it was with the intent to loose the weight, but i quickly realized that it was the satisfaction of knowing i was improving my physical conditioning and the enjoyment of being outside running in nature and the great people i was meeting that ultimately kept me going,. just concetrate on enjoying your runs and the weight loss will come naturally for you.  lexb is right .

    had rough couple days with humidity and my knees adjusting to new shoes,kept mileage low for couple runs to let them adjust to new style of shoes.  did 9 mile last night and knees finnaly felt better, think i will do 1 more 6 miler tonite, then 4 mile hill run tommorrow , and 17 miler sunday,.lookin forward to the serinty of the forest and river,.gonna head out around 0400 and wake up the birds.Wink

    I got run off the road the other day by a faster female (of course, she was probably 20 years younger than me..that's my exuse and I'm sticking to it). I know this will be a shock to many people, but men and women are physically different! *sarcasm

    Anyway, if you compare top runners to top runners, average to average, men are faster. Physically speaking, men have more muscle mass, so generally surpass women in physical activities. I wouldn't say men are naturally faster than women, but with equal training men will be faster.

    Anyway, all that's just my opinion, and in no way do I believe women are any less capable then men.

    ten miles nice and easy. I met up with the girl and one of her (well, both of our) friends and ran with them for about four miles or so. When they were done I finished up the rest on my own.

    Tomorrow is the race I was planning on peaking at for the summer, but since i injured my achilles, I won't even be racing in racing flats. We will see what happens

    Today is a well deserved rest day.  I put in a lot of hard training this week and I am feeling it in my hamstrings and lower back. 

     pappypage : You are right.  I tend to panic when I feel that the pounds are still there. I need to get over it!  I am having a blast hanging outside and enjoying nature. I also found a new running partner who is helping to keep me motivated.

     May try to either do a ride or run the trails on Sat -- depending on how I feel.  Trying to mix it up a bit.

    Last long (ish) run before the crazy relay race (which is next weekend). Did an 8.4 mile loop with some hills and a bit of trail in 1hr15 mins approx, bringing me in at about a 9 min mile pace. That was 'easy/tempo' and it felt great, I'm very happy with my time. Was going to extend my run to 9 miles and hit some trails but my knee started bugging me so wanted to get back and ice, and not push it this close to the race.

    FBP - check out some of the girls posting - while I am not that fast I am making 9min mile pace on 7-8 mile runs. I'm sure Burgalurg is too - and others (it's kind of hard to work out whether some people are male or female from their nickname). Aldiara's cooking on gas too!

    While I do appreciate that at the elite level men are faster than women - there are stacks of good female runners out there that can kick butt and to who 8 or 9 min mile pace is a walk in the park (literally).

    Kdogg- shoes not so brilliant today - (Don't know whether to blame them for my 'twingey' knee) they were rubbing quite badly at the heel. Guess that's just breaking them in and they are trail shoes so they do have to be a bit tougher I guess. But I now have a sore on the back of my ankle : ( I'll keep using them on shorter runs to get past that and hopefully will come good. Other than that they are still good!

    One last, random question - where does all the snot come from when I run?! I haven't had a cold in ages, I am in no way sick now, but whenever I go running I constantly need to blow my nose to clear out huge quantities of mucous that seem to be produced. Where does it come from? Does this happen to anyone else?

    Speaking of female runners that can kick butt, I've got a friend (who's a girl) that used to whip mine all the time. I didnt feel to bad about it since she has run 15:11 for 5k  and 31:26 for 10k and that puts her really far up the list of best runners in the world.

    Lexb - I have no answers for your snot problem, thats pretty strange lol

    lexb i hav same problem, including very thick at base of throat that i cant seem to clear up or down,.i asked doctor , and there reply was that due to the amount of time i was spending running,  i was ingesting more of the polen and allergenic material in the air and that distance runners hav a tendency to develop "exercise asma and or allergies" due to the large exposure to the air contaminates.  not sure if i agree with them, but i hav the same problem and i dont hav any other explanation,.

    No run today but cracked the ton on the bike for the first time. 100km in 3.40 including a massive head wind on the last 30. Did it by myself so hopefully when I get to ride in a group I will go even better. May go for a longer run tomorrow evening.

    awesome gfinkelde,. dont know if humidity is as bad there as it is here, but i did a 1hr speed work out this morning , and breqathing was difficult with the air quality and humidity,.. cant imagine 100k in it,. hope all did well on todays races,. can't wait to hear the results.  17 miler planned for mornin for me,.leavin out at 0430 to try and beat heat n humidity.   drove the course with car after track work this morning and mile 6 to mile 11.5 is one long,. steep uphill,.sigh..but what goes up must come down and i need the hard work on hills for marathon course,.there is an 8 mile down slope in beggining of marathon  and all the advice from the previous runners are to train on the hills to build the quads,. so next 8 weeks i will be concentrating on 1 killer hill run each week. next sunday is local 5k with family,. then no more races untill marathon,. kdogg..i am startin to love these 859's, little heavier then my 892's, but now that my knees hav adjusted to the difference, i think they will serve me well,. hope the achilles held up for ya..

    Well I didn't live up to your predictions in the 5K. I finished in 23:43. 6:30 for the first mile, 14 flat at mile 2 . . . and then came the hill to the finish and I just didn't have it in me to finish strong up the hill. The positive spin on it is that in five years I have stayed in shape and am running longer and stronger than ever before. Also, the race had age category prizes for overall winners and town resident winners. I was the first home town male finisher age 40-49 yrs. old. So I won a $20.00 gift certificate to a local restaraunt. My wife is happy because we have a date for lunch sometime and my kids think I am a superhero because they heard my named announced as a winner. All in all a pretty good dayLaughing!

    awesome rememberely,. glad to hear you are gonna take the wife out to dinner..and enjoyed the race,. one thing about our age...we know we wont be first overall....but we wont be last either..so might as well enjoy the commradery,. and thank the good lord for still lettin us run

    I ran 5m in the morning and then had a race at night. I ran the race pretty well, it was a very controlled effort with a bit sporadic splits, but I got it done. The only problem is, the cops who were directing the traffic directed a lot of people (like 60) the wrong way. Unfortunately, I was one of em.

    4m race - 20:55 (4:57 - downhill, 5:20, 5:30, 5:05 - slightly uphill). My time is actually an estimate. I was making a push to catch one of my teammates and he ran 20:38, I figured I was about 50-75m back when I took the wrong turn (which was with about 400m to go). I was in 5th or 6th place when I got misdirected. 

    I'm pleased. Like I said, this wasn't an all out effort, it was a pretty hard run and I felt good most of the way.

    9.8 miles....very bad run yesterday. 1 hour, 50 minutes. So bad, that if next week I do this again I'm dropping out of the marathon. Calling it a run is stretching the truth, I'm not sure I ran more than 7 miles of the distance...probably less, and was scheduled to run13.

     Rememberly: Sounds like you were right on pace for my prediction...until the hill on the last mile. Congrats on the win for your hometown age group!

    16 miler today, planned on 17 but the course i had picked to run took a bigger toll on me then i expected,.there was a 5 mile hill climb at mile 5 to 10 and it beat me up pretty good,. then i missed the road i was supposed to turn on and crossed into the next hills by mistake and had to back track over another 2 miles of steep hills,.by the time i hit 15 miles i was grabbin my cell phone n callin the wife to bring me water and i blew off the last mile when she arrived. i started at 0500 but humidity was still unreal..felt crappy when i started run today but wanted to try n tough it out ,.almost made it..junkie dont give up ,. this week has been tough running with the humidity and heat,. and we all have some bad days,.it will pass and you will hav better days.

    18.1miles in the rain.  Good pace at about 9:20, but I've got places I never knew could chafe.  At least the deer flies weren't out.

    Beach to Beacon in two weeks.

    Ran 4.00 miles/walked 2 miles (came out later than usual could not deal with the sun and the beach-goers on the boardwalk).

    Congrats rememberly!! =) just got back from a weekend up in Chicago. It was a nice retreat from my small town. I was scheduled to run 12 miles yesterday but my hubby wasn't really cool with me running by myself in Chicago (he was testing for the state police and couldn't run with me). So, I did 5 miles on a treadmill. Boring! But on the positive side, I think i only walked about 10 minutes (it took me 68 min to complete 5 miles) and I wasn't winded at all! I think I ran 27 min before I took my first walk break! I should've gotten more milage in, but treadmills are just boring. Anyways, 3 weeks till CDC and I'm psyched!! Hope everyone has a great week.

    Kudos for taking first place rememberly!  Awesome job.  

    lexb -- my nose is always running -- Especially on long runs and it does'nt matter what the weather is like. I have to wear a sweat band on my wrist because it is so gross.  I can't stop it.  There may be something to what pappypage's doctor said, because  I am asthmatic and I constantly have to deal with phlegm in my throat or a runny nose --  especially on long runs. 

    Ran 10 mi today. Had weird ankle pain towards mi 7.  This is my first distance run since February. Not my greatest run, but I am happy that I made it to the end.  Trying to get back to my 9:25 pace before my next 10K race at the end of August.

    Just got back from a 2 week vacation.  The first week I was lazy and I ran 32 miles, and then slacked even more in the 2nd week,  I ran 2.5 miles everyday at anywhere from 6:05-6:15 pace.  I really gotta lay off the short quick runs and start doing some long runs if i want to shave time off my 5k  .

    10km Hyde Park run on Sunday.  Manged to finish without walking - approx 64mins.  felt good/consistent, although glad when it was over.  If 10km is tiring not sure how I'm going to get thru the half in September - practice, practice, practice!

    Seem to have been quite  few races - well done to all.  Your mileage is impressive - 18miles?? are you guys human?!!

    An inactive weekend for me, due to not staying at home and working very long hours (although I know for some that is no excuse)! Just finished 2.3mile run, managed to keep going for 5mins non stop at points with the walk/run idea. Considering just over a week ago I was struggling to do 2.5mins I am really happy.

    4 miles today in 34:41. This week the mileage increases again 4 today, 8 on Tues, 4 on Wed, Rest on Thurs, 17 miles on Saturday. I get tired just thinking about it, but I've been slowly building and feel confident that I can go the distance.

    Junkie99, you do need to listen to your body and if you do not feel that you are ready for the marathon, then you may have to give yourself some more time to get ready. But you can't make that decision after one bad long run. Stick with it and see how you progress. I know after I ran 16 miles I wondered how I'd be ever able to run another 10 when it comes to marathon day. (And still wonder.) But I am going to trust my training schedule. I have never run a marathon so I really do not know what to expect, but I am going to keep working hard and try my best to finish in 4 hours. Right now if I run at a pace around 9+ min/mile I have been able to keep going. If I try to go too fast on the long runs, that's when it gets really hard. So I stay at my comfortable pace and I do OK. I do not know how it will all play out when I get above 20 miles, but I'll face that when it comes. For now I just take each training session at a time, try to enjoy the run/challenge, and remember my other goal that goes beyond the marathon - staying fit. I nail that goal everyday I get up and go for a run. So, all that to say, Junkie99, don't give up!

    Oh, I saw a Great Blue Heron today on my run. It was wading by the edge of a pond I ran by.

    well, took an extra day off on Sunday. I'll do a run today instead of cross training. Rememberly, if it was just one run, I'd probably get over it, but it's been my last 2 long runs. I'll go through this week and see how the long run goes...I'll probably adjust my training and do 11 or so, and then hit 12 or 13 the next week instead of 10. If I can't make these runs, I don't see how I can even come close to being ready for a marathon. I don't plan on giving up running/staying in shape...just give up on my marathon goal.

    Wanted to run today, but my knees and hips are screaming.   I had to take a break today.  Everything is creaking and cracking today.   I sound like the Tin Man.   Would be good if a shot of WD40 could help.   Oh the glory of aging!  That 10mi run nearly did me in.  I don't know how all of you push to 16 and 18 mi.  I hope to get to that point one day.  

    Will cross train tomorrow and maybe do a light run.

    2x1km, 4x500m, 2x1km then 2x250m to finish. Managed to do them all at better than 4min km pace which left me 3/4 dead!!!

    FWIW after the distance vs speed training discussion that has been going on, last year I ran 5 min/km for basically all my runs from 8kms to mara length and was doing a lot of distance running. Now I am doing one 'run' a week and 2 speed sessions, and have brought my times down to 4.30 min/km. Running less, but doing the 2 shorter sessions a week has imporved my times considerably

    8 miles is 73:29 (9:10/mile). Didn't really want to get up to run this morning, just felt lazy and tight. But dragged myself out there and ran.

    Hello everyone!

    I am 17 years old and just really starting running last week.  I was at a church camp and my youth leader and I ran 3.1 miles in the morning one day.  Monday of this week i ran around 3 miles to break in my new running shoes i got. Tuesday i did a pretty easy 1 miler around 11 a.m so the sun was brutal but i pushed through it.  This morning I got up at 6:30 and went and ran with my youth leader around town.  We did 4 miles in about 30 mins so not a bad pace at all.  Thought i was going to die when we approached the finish but I just kept moving my legs.  I think just thinking about all of my friends sleeping in their nice soft beds while i am out running is what gave me the motivation to finish.  Also seeing the looks on peoples faces as they drive by like "those guys are crazy" is pretty funny.  I look forward to thursday (a 5 mile run)!
