Serious progress all round. KDogg - Arthur Lydiard would be proud! When you do two runs in a day, are they all at training pace or do you seriously back off the second run?
Another 8k this morning. Steady progress for me.
up at 4am this morning for an easy 3 miler... alas plans scuppered by disappearing headlamp. Can't find it anywhere and it's just too dark to risk it without.

When I saw the $35 fee for Nike 10K..it was not worth me travelling all the way from the Rockaways to Randall Island. Futhermore that's the rate I paid for my More Marathon ...that's way too much for 6 miles.
My butt hurts this morning and I struggled to run my 4 miles. I ran two miles straight stopped and then did another mile stopped and then finally I completed the 4 miles.
hey kiwi, haha, Lydiard is definitely one of the coaches I looked to when deciding which training principles would work best for me. Most of my runs are at a fairly relaxed conversational pace (6:30-7:00 per mile depending on the day/company). I don't actually keep record of how far I run, I just call every 7:00 a mile and I don't really run the same routes, so I can't compare how fast I went this week vs how fast I went last week. So to answer your question, I don't really know if one run is slower than the other, it all just seems to depend on if I am running with someone or by myself, if I'm by myself then I generally go around 6:45 pace all the time if I am with someone else it might be a lot faster or much slower. Even though Lydiard advocates lots of miles, he also believes they should be at a fairly quick pace, which just doesn't work for me. I gotta make my easy days easy enough so that I can recover from my key workouts and races/time trials.
I just hope Lydiard was right when he says it only takes six weeks to fully develop your anaerobic system, because I was kinda banking on that when I wrote up my season plan.

Today was an easy Satan run (6.66 miles) in the afternoon. Wow, it's so much different running in the afternoon heat compared to the morning or late evening. I ran at 9:13 per mile...about a minute slower than my marathon pace.
There's a local 10k race in about a month, I'm thinking about making that week an "easy" week before I hit a couple 20 milers next month. I'd like to see what I could run if I really pushed hard for a 10k.
Junkie: Why do you run so many 20 milers?? I thought that was a no-no, unless you are building for a marathon--and even then you should only run a few of them, then recover. I could be wrong, so help me out here.

Okay, got in 6k this morning with 4 * 400/200 repeats at roughly 5k pace. Felt good afterward.
Got my HR monitor back today so I can become device dependent again. Actually felt pretty relaxed about running without it for the last couple of weeks. I think it's set a precedent to leave it behind every now and again.
I would never leave my HR monitor behind. It is my gage of how I'm doing, better than anything else. As your fitness level improves, it's easy to overdo it on easy days. My HR monitor beeps and tells me to back off. On Tempo runs it beeps if I get below my desired area. I love it.
Good Luck on your Marathon, Junkie. I'm planning on doing the Walt Disney Marathon in January. I'm geussing you highly recommend Higdon's schedule. I'll go check it out. It's very hot and humid here in Florida, so I've fallen off a bit, too.

Ok so a word from the wise... running 7 miles in 30degree heat with a head cold is not a good idea. That was 61 minutes of pure agony and misery. My legs felt heavy, I felt slow, my shoulders were stiff, my nose was running... about 2 blocks from my house my legs just stopped. Every atom of my being was screaming at me to stop so I walked the last bit.
just worked out my pace tho... I thought I was super slow - like 10 or even 11 min miles when I was actually 9:20 ish.
I had intended an early 'sunrise run' but today is my first day off in of 5am-8pm days all week, so when I woke at 5.30 am there was no way was I getting up. The dawn looked incredible too. Darn it. While this heat lasts I am going to have to stick with early runs I think.
Took yesterday and today off. I've put in a solid 70kms this week. Sandy point half tomorrow. I havent run a race for a couple of months so I'm really excited about it! I think the flat course also has me excited!
I entered the Great Australian race yesterday super value. What other sport can you compete with the world record holder and the best in your country. Last time I checked it was pretty hard to get a round of golf with Tiger Woods or a game of tennis with Nadal or Federer. So this is just a super opportunity. Haile and Buster better watch out!

Kdogg - I drove 120 miles last week. Actually even that isnt true. I have ridden to work every day this month which is 200kms a week, so I have cycled that distance.
Thursdays run was crap, but I did my long run today. 28.1km in 2.08. It was my longest since last years mara, with 57 days to go to this years. My calf tightened up a bit during so I ddnt push up the hills as I might have done, but it has settled into normal soreness, rather than pain, so that is good. Nice bit of rain to start of with, and but very comfortable 8-10C for the run.
Ex-kiwi - long shot, but were you running around Braeside/Dingley this morning. I ran past a bloke who looks not unlike your pic. Wearing white gloves if I can remember correctly.

3.1 miles in 36 minutes is very respectable!! As everyone on this forum has had to remind me from time to time, your long run is an EASY run, it's supposed to be slower.
You should stick to one long run a week, try to increase it every week or every other week by about 10%. The plan that I stuck to for the rest of my runs were to get in one hill work out, one speed workout (I used a treadmill for this when I first started or try a track or fartleks) and an easy run (if I could squeeze it in). With rest days in between - and definitely a rest day after the long run.
As I always say there are far more experienced runners on here than me, so I am sure some others will jump on and give you better/more advice but I think that's a good basic plan. It sure worked for me!
Back after a 10 or so day absence. I spent Thurs of last week through Fri. this week fishing in Neah Bay so my running was missed during most of that time. I was up every day at 4 or 4:30 AM, in the boat by 5AM, ran the boat out 1.5 hours and fished anywhere from 4-8 hours with another 1.5 hour run of the boat back in. By the time the fish were cleaned, vacuum packed and put in the freezer, a shower was had and dinner (usually with a lot of wine) was consumed, it was 9-10PM. After repeating that for 9 days in a row, I'm bushed. Nonetheless, I did manage to sneak one good run in on Thurs evening and it was a beautiful route.
I was out at Neah Bay (far NW corner of WA state) and was staying in a cabin on Hobuck Beach. I ran from there to Cape Flattery trailhead. The run is about 6.7 miles along some extremely pretty coast line for the first half or so and then through cedar forest on the way to the trailhead. After the first mile or so, the next 3 miles is all uphill. The remainder is either slight downhill or fairly flat. You're rewarded at the end with a trail to the cape. The trail is .75 miles each way and there are fabulous vistas out onto Tatoosh Island and varios rock formations. All-in-all, a great place to run. I wasn't too quick on this run (63 mins even) as it was about 75F out and I had only 4-6 hours of sleep the previous 8 nights in a row. Also, it was kinda fun as I had been on the boat for so many days I still felt the rolling motion while running. About every 3-4 steps it would feel like I was going up a couple of feet and then down the next 3-4 steps. Here's a link to the route.

22 miler for 0400 tommorrow, gonna try the new gels tommorrow, anybody use a "camelback" ?? wondering if its worth the investment,. i just usually use old fashioned water bottles set along route..

rpetreccajr...my experience has been that "most always", the anticipation is usually worse then the prognosis,. go to doc's...at least you can know where you stand, and start the treatment and recovery stage to get back healthy.
Ran sandy point half marathon today. Elated with my time of 1.42.28. Thats a pb by almost 9 minutes! Found today to be really strong and easy rhythm wise. Finished and gave it all. Felt hard but wonderful all at the same time!
Hey fricster and Harro - did you both run Sandy Point? Good results for you both. The half is a great distance would you agree? It's my personal favourite.
rpetreccajr - I have to agree with pappypage. Don't keep putting it off.
pappypage - i ran hundreds of kilometres with a camelback in New Zealand in the years before I moved to Australia. They're great for running in parks and bush areas without any water supply. Typically I would do runs through forest trails several miles from home where it was impractical to stash bottles beforehand. I still have it and once my mileage supports it, I will replace the bladder and start heading for the trails again.
gfinkelde - not me. I haunt the roads around Wheelers Hill and Glen Waverley.
Yesterday I was due for a long run but had lots of commitments so threw in a short 3 miles with the middle mile at tempo. Today I did 17k in 1:32. Felt just a little heavy on the way out but felt really good on the way back.
aldiara88 - yeah I watched that. There've have been some awesome performances at these games. The most jaw-dropping for me so far though was Usain Bolt's absolutely INSANE 100m final!
Hi ex-kiwi - yes it was the Sandy Point Half for me - and I admit that I am beginning to relish the 21.1km run - it was a really good flat course. I have not worked out how to safely push myself so that I run to the end with nothing left - I do not want to blow up mid way- and certainly yesterday was pretty cruisy for most of the run. I would love to get a bit faster over this distance, I guess it is just being slightly faster the whole way rather than a turn of speed at the end.
I will work it out as I get more expereince I guess.
I have loved these Olympics - Daria Torres - 41 yeard old mum, and oksana in the Gymnastics - now cometing for Germany at 33 years old and at her 5th olympics. Old people rock!!! Just goes to show what we are all capable of - very inspiring

set out for my 22 miler this morning but, everything was screwing up from start,. watch band broke yesterday, wife forgot to put running gear in dryer last night,. forgot to put body glide in the "special areas"..ouch ,boy did i pay for that.
,.son couldnt find his watch too lone me so i had to run an extra 2 miles to get to where i parked my truck to get a backup watch,.and had to run in heavy long sweats since clothes were wet,. ended up running 24 miles instead of planned 22. took " ice bath " when i got home, brrrrr., but i needed to reduce some inflamation .
on positive side , .... gels worked well, and since i ran 24 instead of 22, i now hav the confidence i can complete all 26.2. and it appears i hav the energy problem solved, the shoe and sock issues resolved,.but most important.....wife made me an excellent sunday dinner..roast and mashed taters and all the extras ,. life is good

I've been reading and being inspired by this forum for a few weeks now, so I thought I'd join the fray. I want to see what its like to hold myself accountable to a group of fellow runners.
Ran just over 10 mi. this weekend at a comfortable 9:30 pace. Getting ready for Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October. Good luck to everyone who's training, and those who are just out there pounding the pavement.

12 miles for me this morning. Stifling humidity, but i toughed it out. I'm trying to overcome a habit of looking down when I run. I'm told that really hurts your posture (can anyone confirm?). I'm doing much better, as I remain conscious of it.

I can't believe I have actually being hitting 40 run miles each week and as my marathon draws near I am running more miles. Just have to focus now on reducing my time. Today is my cross-train day. Hit the gym and worked out for 40 mins on my upper body and another 15 mins walking the threadmill on incline.
Been out of the loop for a few weeks, so i'll get caught up real quick.
Last week I was in cloudcroft NM doing some mountain running at around 9000ft. It was a prety tough week even though the mileage wasn't very high. This past week was pretty average, i think i hit about 80miles total. About 10/day then one fartlek day with a morning run and one long run day. I bonked the last 20min of the long run, i dont know if i've ever felt that bad but the fartlek went very well.
Tomorrow we have our first day of practice as a team. We're probably doing a tempo run cause i'm sure my coach wants to see what kind of shape everyone is in coming back from the summer. It should be interesting, i'm almost positive it will turn into a race since everyone will be wanting to prove themselves, and/or trying to not get beat by freshmen and that sort of thing.
GIlly32 - I have a bad habit of looking down also when I run. I mostly do it on my hill runs. I believe it restricts the constant flow of air through your windpipe.
Ran 5 miles this morning.
5 mile tempo run this morning with the team in 26:15. My splits were fairly even but we got a little to ambitious on the 2nd mile and backed off a bit, 5:18 5:10 5:17 5:15 5:15. Much better than my first tempo last season so i'm pretty happy with it. We'll finish off with a 1 hour recovery run this afternoon.
Hey, everyone! I'm back (I think). I have been resting and icing my stupid shoulder for about a month now, I think. Did anyone notice my absence?
I would have to say that it is kind of cool to be gone for this long, because through the 191 new posts, I got to see all of everyone's progress over the past few weeks! Great job to all!!
I ran a 4.5 mile (or so) on trail yesterday. I wore my arm sling on the first and last 1.5 miles. I took it off for the middle 1.5. I'm not really sure why, but the logic in my head while I was running was that I should use it at least a little bit. Afterward, I thought that I probably shouldn't have used it at all, but whatever. I was really sore last night (like I did a hundred pushups), but it wasn't "funny" pain, or shooting pain, which is a big change. I feel pretty good this morning, though a bit stiff, so I'm going to rest and ice again today and try a run either tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on how I feel.

Rogerbum: Thanks for the info on the breathing problems (looking down) while running. I think I'm afraid of stepping on a snake or something, plus, uncaring dog owners let their dogs poop in the street. Still, I must look up.
I struggled through 12 miles this morning. I was very sluggish due to 2 main reasons: stiffling humidity here in Florida, ahead of this approaching storm; and tight muscles. I did strength work yesterday (squats and deadlifts) and failed to stretch last night; leaving me tight this morning.
Oh well, mama said there would be days like this. And I still finished my mileage. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better (6 miles of speed work).
Did 4 miles today, First 2 at 5k pace and second 2 at moderate pace. Mile splits were, 5:49, 6:05, 6:36, 6:43.
