KDogg: Fricster intelligently stated what I was trying to say. I, too, just finished Hal Higdon's book, "Marathon: The Ultimate Guide." His chapter on over-training is very insightful. But i didn't want to suggest that to you, since you are such an experienced runner.
I agree with Lex, it's good to know that you hurt like the rest of us.
Get well, man!
Over the weekend, I covered 12 flat comfortable miles around the downtown D.C. area, including some of the monuments. The route included a 10K part of my upcoming marathon - the same part of the same marathon where I hit the wall four years ago. It was great to get a practice run on that stretch of road, especially so I could learn the sightlines and not panic on a road that seems to go on forever.
Getting excited for the fall season!
Grat job, Bonzi!
13 miles for me this morning. I had fresh legs due to a few days off, during Topical Storm Fay, here in FL. 13 felt great, other than tight muscles. There was nothing about the storm that should have prevented me from stretching, which I didn't do. I stretched some during my hydration break; then for an hour, after my run, along with the roller ball, and boy do I feel better. I have learned the value of consistent stretching, especially when you are doing strength training, also. Every runner needs as much flexibility and fluidity as possible.
Looking forward to 13 more tomorrow.
Happy Running!
I just started running again this morning. I'm currently a Junior in High School, and I was in Track my Freshman year. However, I haven't done any sports (officially) since then, and I've hardly exercised at all. My friend just started using this site (mapmyride, actually) for his biking, and he told me about it. School starts Wednesday, so we decided that I'd run, and he'd bike, and out paths would cross every morning.
This morning was the first, and we actually timed it well, and passed each other. It was only a two-mile run, and I was exhausted during the second mile, but I'm just glad I ran again. I'm going to run every morning during the school year (which starts Wednesday), and hopefully I'll be in great shape by the end of the year. I really want to run the 2009 Chicago Marathon, so I have to start training now.
Also, would it be wise to buy a Marathon Training book?
EDIT: heh, I'm so tired that, after re-reading my message, I realize that I repeated myself quite a few times. Oh well, I'll keep it as it is.
Ran 10 miles on Saturday, breaking into double digits for the first time in a year. Did 3 mile recovery on Sunday.
Did 6 miles before work, 2 warmup, 2.5 tempo, 1.5 cooldown. Tempo pace around 7:30.
Training for 1/2 marathon in Portland, MA this October.
I did my 5 mile tempo run this morning and it did not go well! 27:14 which is about 5:25 pace, the last 2 miles i was struggling to hit 5:30 and last week I hit 5:15's and it felt so easy. I seemed to be a little more fatigued than the rest of the guys who still ran a little slower just not nearly as much. O well no worries, i got an easy 6miler this afternoon to rest up on.
Welcome Runihura good to see your getting back into running!
Gilly/Lex: Even Bekele hurts like the rest of us, it just takes 3 consecutive 4min miles to do it ;)
you guys are absolutely right, overtraining is certainly a possible cause of me feeling the way I do, and I definitely considered that that might be the case. However, I think there is a greater likelihood that it is either a. mono or b. iron deficiency.
This pain on my upper left abdomen is certainly a telltale sign of spleen issues, but I have been having it for quite awhile now. So it could be something else. Anyway, if you couple (possible) spleen problems with serious fatigue and you have a textbook case of mono.
Iron deficiency is an interesting thought too. I traditionally have low iron levels for whatever reason. Oftentimes, I will have to take iron pills just to perk back up, which is all fine and all. However, since I have been preparing for my move and since I have moved (the last two or two and a half weeks) I haven't eaten much red meat. I don't eat red meat unless forced and since I haven't had anyone to force me to eat any hamburger, steak, etc for awhile now and I have been neglecting my iron pills (I only take them when I'm feeling unduly fatigued) then we might be on to something.
As I said, overtraining is another possible cause, but I'm not sure thats what it is. Here's why. Overtraining is not training too much, its not recovering enough. When it comes to recovery, I am very careful that I do what is necessary to make sure my body replentishes its glycogen stores and has enough (lean) protein to rebuild broken down muscles. I haven't altered my training too greatly, I've been putting in a lot of mileage week in and week out for the past 12 weeks, but last week was my highest mileage week ever, so maybe that was part of the cause...we'll see
I will proceed with my planned workout tomorrow and see how it goes. (my run tonight was not bad, I could turnover fairly well when I wanted to) If it goes well, then great. If not, then we'll play around with some treatments. Thanks for the suggestions
chiggy - here's my weekly mileages for the past 12 weeks. My original plan was to build for three weeks (until I got to 110 miles, then I would hold steady) and then fall back every fourth week. 93, 100, 85 (down week, one day off), 105, 110, 108, 95 (down week, one day off), 111, 111, 111, 119, 100 (down week, one day off). So I do take down weeks, but every 4th week rather than every 3rd. Two weeks ago I decided to build instead of fall back, which may be contributing to what I am feeling now, but its weird because I front loaded that week's mileage, so it doesn't make sense as to why I am still feeling the effects now rather than at the end of that week (in which I felt amazing).
kdogg - you certainly know your body and training regimen much better than the rest of us. Sounds like you think it is one of three things, mono, low iron or overtraining and you seem to be ruling out overtraining. Seems like a blood test would quickly differentiate between the other two. Keep in mind that studies have shown that moving is one of the most stress inducing things you can engage in, right up there with divorce or death of a loved one.
I did the first century ride of my life this Saturday, 102 miles in 6 hours. Felt pretty good until the last 25 miles. Dropped my speed to about 13.5 mph for the last 25 after averaging 18 mph for the first 75. Definitely didn't have my fueling and hydration as under control as I should have. But like the first (and only) marathon I did, it was a great personal accomplishment. Big difference is that I could walk on my own power after the ride and needed help getting up after the marathon. Sitting on the other hand... let's just say the bike saddle is not my friend.
Well - back posting after a weekend of running.
A nice controlled marathon pacer (that's 5mins/km for me) on Sat. 16kms.
Sunday was a bit like yours fricster. A kids birthday party, followed by a long run. This was the first time I had used gels. They seemed ok, and went down pretty well. (I'm using some lukozade gels a mate brought over from the UK).
But disaster struck at the 30km mark. I probably ran the long run a bit fast (5:40/km) mainly because I didn't start it until 4.00pm, after heaps of buns full of butter, cake, and coffee (bacon and eggs for breaky that morning).
I don't know what happend but all the food in my body wanted out (think down not up) at 30kms. So I walked the last 2kms home feeling pretty cheated. Goes to show you how important it is to eat the right food (no fat, no dairy) before long runs.
But every bad long run results in me learning something new. This time it was the importance of the right food the day of the run. And my shorts, for example (which i bought for the pockets to carry the gels) just become floppy big sweat rags after 20kms - so they are out.
Ex-Kiwi - I haven't used the RS200 for intervals at all actually. So I'm not much help. Good solid half marathon time there!
So this week is milage reduction again. and week after that is my last 32kms....before Berlin. ....
KDogg - good luck with the plans. We're all looking forward to seeing you back on your feet, so to speak. You really are an inspiration to us mortals.
SimmoT - er Thanks? I'll go and haunt the Polar website and try and track down some forums.
I'm officially starting a 10 week build-up to my half on Nov 2nd from this week, using a cut-down version of my "trusty" old 15 week marathon plan from years gone by. Three key sessions a week. Long run once a week, tempo once a week and hills changing to 800s once a week. Interspersed among these are easy days. Everything is based on time rather than distance, until you get the 800's that is. But even these can have 3:00 - 3:30 bursts instead of fixed distance. I'm excited! (Silly old fart!)
Hi - ran home from work with the back pack- 6kms in 33 mins. was a nice run - the nights are getting lighter.
Simmo - so sorry to hear about the long run - there is a lesson for all of us there!!
kdogg thats pretty interesting and looks like a good plan, i'll have to keep that in mind if i ever move my racing up in distance. Although i would probably have to take more down weeks as i seem to be more prone to injury than you. You're gonna kill em when the time comes.
Well i think i figured out why my tempo felt so bad. I woke up this morning pretty sick. My roommate moved back in friday and was sick when she got here and i have all the same symptoms she did. Even though i wasnt feeling sick yesterday it always effects you even before you start to feel it. It took her about 3 days to get over it so hopefully i can kick this a little quicker than that.
7 miles 8:45 pace yesterday,. 6.5 miles 7:55 pace today,.this is mileage reduction week for me,.and comes at good time to let my hamstring finish healing. almost all soreness is gone now,.gonna keep short quick pace workouts all week. then next week starts last 3 week cycle before taper begins last week of sept. gotta push 110% to get every bit of benefit outta this last training cycle. the anticipation is beginning to build now. i find myself "daydreaming" more frequently about raceday. i am not fast like most of you youngsters,. but i started running 13 months ago with this goal in mind....26.2 in under 4 hrs....and loose 75 lbs. now that race day will quickly be here, i hav lost the weight, and the thrill of knowing i am soon going to test myself and see if i hav prepared myself enough to accomplish my goal of 26.2 is sometimes overwhelming. but extremely exciting.
simmo, how many gels did you use?,. could you telll a difference?. i hav been using the "gu gels",. and "power gels" and both seem to work equally well.
kdogg..: "there can be only one"...i think that might be you highlander..it sounds too me like you might be low on iron,.and that with the stress of moving and starting school could easily hav combined too cause your symptoms.
hope you feel better soon,.you are the only "non kenyan" i know who runs that fast that far
KDogg: Overtraining is still overtraining. Sometimes it can be difficult to know when you have not recovered enough, because there are so many ways it can manifest itself. Everyone, as you know, has that breaking point where things start to break down...sometimes inexplicably.
Many elites don't hit the kind of mileage you are talking, dude.
Good Luck
I ran a workout today. I did a six mile tempo in 31:46. The first four miles were a bit fast (20:46), but I didn't feel like I was working way too hard. I decided to back it off a bit on mile five, because I didn't want to be destroyed tomorrow. So I ran probably a 5:40-5:45 or so and then finished up with a 5:15-5:20 because I wanted to work on closing hard even when I'm tired.
It feels refreshing to be back to normal, at least for today. If anyone is interested to as what I did, I will say I ate a lot of taco bell and took in about 400% of the recommended daily iron intake in supplements last night about about 300% today (NOT RECOMMENDED UNLESS YOU SEE A DOCTOR!!!).
Thanks everyone
p.s. chiggy has faster PRs than me (much much faster in the shorter distances), you guys need to show him more love
We Love You Chiggy!! : )
he he he
Worked all yesterday so no training, had a surprise day off today so made it kickboxing in the morning and had an awesome workout then running with the club - a special evening for this nike+ race thing (a great idea, but how freakin' much?!!!). It's pouring down and blummin' cold in Vancouver (seem to have bypassed late summer and fall and gone straight to winter) - got soaked and chilled to the bone but had a brilliant run. 3miles in 23:43 so one second faster than last weeks run. I was pushing but it felt more tempo than race, it felt easier than last week. 7:47 mile I am happy with!
Pappy Page. I think I used 4 gels, and yeah, I reckon they made a difference. they definitely seem to go down easy. I will use them on my next long run that's for sure.
Hey all. 5 mile run for me this morning in 39:45, which was just about what I was shooting for (8min/mi). I wanted to do another mile, but I just didn't roll out of bed early enough. It was nice outside however - 62* and clear.
Good running to all of you!
I found out that there's a group that runs two nights a week from the running store that's next to my building, so I joined them last night. I haven't run with more than one person it a while, so being in a group made me feel like I was back at cross country practice in high school. Overall, the run covered 6 miles at 8:30 pace, and went by very quickly thanks to my new friends.
pappypage - I used 4 GU's for that distance also, and they do work, especially if you find a good brand and good flavors that work for you. Also, taking GU's with water or some liquid will help you absorb them faster and they will be more effective that way. Best of luck - you can do it.
just a quick 6 again tonite,. short on time from work,.thx for the info simmot and Bonzi on the gels. ham felt really good tonite,.slow week is definitely helpin. callin for couple days of rain here from tropical storm faye, hope its a warm rain.
glad you're fellin better kdogg,..
haha thanks kdogg, although i dont think my pr's are any better at or above 5k. If so not by much and not for long. You seem like your gettin ready to post some great times.
Well i got lucky and only had the 24hour stomach bug. So today i went out for a 45 min run and ran REALLY slow, i felt extremely drained. Tomorrow we leave for our team camp in NM and im not ready for the altitude. I need to recoup a little more from being sick but i really dont have any choice.
Keep up the good work everyone! Keep it fun!
Hi all - I did Personal training on wednesday arvo - lots of core work, and upper body strength.
Ran today mid morning - a rare day off work, so I just ran - no idea how far I went, just stopped when I felt like it after 1:15mins.
Nice running day today - not too cold, real sunshine - yay
ziggyrottie - I went to the gym for about 18 months about 10 years ago when I got cheap membership through the running club I was in. I followed a routine published in Runners World magazine developed specifically for runners. There were only 7 exercises in the routine. They were:
There's too much detail to lay it all out here but they certainly helped me run injury free for the whole period. Since then I've been relying on body weight excercises and lots of stretching. You should be able to get someone from the gym to run you through each of those excercises in turn, even if it's a one-off extra cost. The emphasis is on high reps with medium weights, not out and out strength and power. Good Luck.
Training for me: Yesterday, 10k tempo run and today was 6k easy.
pappypage: awesome. Good luck with the longer race.
Hey, it's lots of fun to read about all your work here guys. I've been using MapMyRun for about a year now, and it's really helped me step up my running. Last year I got back into running and ended up averaging 2 runs a week with a total mileage under 10 miles per week. This year I have been sticking with a regular schedule for 12 weeks in a row, now running 4 times a week, and last week I hit 20 miles! Yup, I'm definitely hooked. I'm about medium pack speed: definitely not a youngster anywhere near 5 min miles (or even 6 min)! I can hold my own with a 3-4 mile tempo run around 7:30 pace.
I run early in the mornings during the week, because life is too busy the rest of the day between work and the kids activities (we have 2 active teenagers and 3 under 10, not counting the cats and dog!) My dog is a Corgi which means he's really cute and high energy, but he has no legs, so endurance is an issue. He always wants to go out with me, but he's only good to run about 1/2 a mile. So I walk him for about 30 minutes before leaving him to go back to sleep while I run my mileage.
This week is semi-typical. Monday was 3 miles in 27:34, Wednesday was 3 mile tempo in 23:46 with 1 mile before and after, and today was 3 miles in 28:12. Usually Saturday is my long run, which is now up to 8 miles (soon to be 9), but I'll be participating in a 5K race this week. On July 4, I acheived my 5K PR with a time of 22:50 + I got 3rd place for my age group! I'm not planning on trying too hard Saturday ... just want to see where I've come in the last 2 months. My next "big" 5K is the end of September.
My goal is to try to build up to about 30 miles per week and continue through the Ohio winter. My brother and I signed up for the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, the first weekend in May 2009. That will be the first 1/2 marathon for me, but at least I have some time. And motivation to keep up the running through the winter months! Sorry for the long intro, but I'm gonna try to start posting here. Thanks for all of your inspirational posts, guys & gals!
D-Jammer - Welcome!
Ex: Thanks for the workout tips.
Chiggy and KDogg - thanks for encouraging us mere mortals.
I'm doing 60 minute easy runs today and tomorrow, then a 16 mile long run Saturday.
Happy Running to all!
Once again pouring rain.... aaaargh... come back summer
Actually I quite enjoyed it, a bit chilly so I had to keep up the pace to save my core heat, but quite exhilarating. There was a lot of smiles and nods of respect with the other runners hardcore enough to brave the torrent!
Did just over 4 miles in 37 mins, alternating between easy and tempo, averaged an 8:30 pace so maybe slightly more easy - but I was wet and cold and carrying extra pounds with the wet jacket.
Need to get to the gym to start doing some weight / strength training - the kickboxing just isn't cutting it! Trying to work it into my schedule is the challenge but hopefully my hours should drop a little soon and give me more time.
Ran 4.5 miles today.
ziggyrottie - I try to work out my upper body atleast twice per week for 30 mins. I enjoy the 45 min spin and palaties classes at my gym which gives me a break from running.
hey D-Jammer, good luck with the Indy mini. It should be a good time, everyone I have talked to who has ran it (a lot of people) has loved it. The only real complaint is that there are a ton of people in the middle of the pack so it gets kind of hard to move around if you are trying to run a fast time. But if you are just there for the experience, the race is unbeatable.
I'm thinking of throwing my hat into the ring this May, it'll be fun to race those Kenyans and semi-elites.
12/8 double today, probably my last long double day for a long time.
Hey LexB - That must just about make you a "real" runner! On ya!
Easy run of 6k again today. Feel almost like a cheat, but that's what the program calls for so that's what I did! (30-40 minutes easy)
Hey all. I decided to walk yesterday with my wife instead of doing my free weights in the basement. This morning I ran 6 miles in a pretty good time for me - 47:10. The whole run felt really good! I'm past due on my weight/strength training routines since I slacked off this week.
Hopefully I'll get some "other" workout this weekend cleaning out the flower beds, mulching, and mowing the yard. I'm also planning on joining my local group on Sunday morning for another 10 mile run. Hopefully it won't be to unbearably hot.
D-Jammer - I am also planning on running the Indi half in May. I've been running about 18 months, and I've only ever run one 5K (back in July), and I'm going to run a 10K in October. I'm looking for ward to the half, but a little nervous as well. I hear that it is a packed house!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Six mile run with the group last night. My right foot started to hurt halfway through, but I think it has more to do with not stretching enough before hand than anything with the shoes. I was able to fix it and finish just fine.
14 mile run scheduled for tomorrow. Gotta get it done in time for a full day of football (American version - just so there's no confusion for all of the worldly people on here.)
No torrential rain today, just overcast and a few spots. Sticking with 1/2 marathon plan (with my schedule it has been tough) did interval session. 2mi @ easy pace, 2x(1:00, 1:30, 2:00) at tempo - actually probably closer to race, then 2mi @ easy. Worked out all in all at 5.6 miles in 49mins (8:30 ish pace).
Yesterday I signed up for the Vancouver Coho run on Sept 7th - it follows the salmon run route down the coast and up the river - 14km in total. Should be a nice run. Apparently it's quite fast, but my aim is to use it to practice pacing myself so for the 1/2 marathon (13 Oct).
Ran with my ipod today and while every now and then it was nice for the most part I think I am starting to prefer running without music!
Ran 7.7 miles in the heat today....59 minutes. Dang, I hope this pays off when it cools down. I was aiming for 55.
Hey everyone....
I'm back. 2 weeks away at a school, with no access to this site. Didn't get as much running is as I would like to have, but I think I kept up my miles enough. I'll find out tomorrow and Sunday...10 miles, then 17 or 18 on Sunday.
How do you get used to running in humidity?? I was in South Carolina for 2 weeks, and the humidity was absolutely miserable! (Had a few guys there from Florida...they tell me it was worse than Florida) I was also stuck running laps (1.75 mile loop). Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them. LOL
Junkie:
Believe me, you don't get used to this Florida Humidity. Thankfully, there are only 3 miserable months. The trade off is we have gorgeous weather in Spring and Fall. And our winter is perfect running weather.
Happy Labor Day to everyone here in the states and happy running to all. Enjoy your weekend!
