Hi All! I'm new to mapmyrun.com and I love it! I got back into running this year after an 8 year layoff. Ran my first 5k, mile run and half marathon all in the last three months.
My training is taking a beating right now as I am nursing a cold and a deep bruise on top of my left foot. Set out for a 5-6 mile tempo run on Monday and had to pull up at 4 because of a strange pain in that same left foot. I think I need new shoes. Or at least it sounds like a good excuse to get some.
Hopefully I'll get out tomorrow for a 5-6 mile jog to just see how the foot is feeling. I've got to get my long runs up in a hurry if I want to make my first marathon in November.
I wanted to comment to LexB about the long runs getting ready for a half marathon: I ran my first about 3 weeks ago. My longest run prior to it had been 11 miles. I got a nasty 24hr stomach virus about 5 days before the race. I was able to run it fairly well - not quite the time I wanted but felt good finishing. If you can't get a 10 or 11 mile long run by two weeks prior to the half marathon, I probably wouldn't try it. But then again, the whole thing is so exciting even if you're not in the best shape at the time of the race. I would say it all depends on your goal. Good Luck!
Welcome BoyJame! : )
Did a four mile with the stroller today. Had some trouble getting motivated while running, but after about two, my mindset improved. I am still having some tenderness in my right knee, but it's nothing serious. My right shoulder hurt today, but not where I injured it (after about mile 2.5-3). I think that after nursing it for so long, the muscles are just getting used to working again. I was feeling like I was doing a bunch of shoulder presses...it would burn while using it to push the stroller, then recover when I wasn't...burn again a little after using it to push the stroller again...recover when I stopped, etc. I'm interested to see how it feels tomorrow.
My times are much slower than before my injury. I'm trying not to place to much emphasis on it, as my body gets back into running everyday. It seems that my mind needs a little work as well, but I'm really good at positive self-talking myself and motivating my way through the tough mental sections of my runs.
Cheerio, people! I'm feeling great! Good to be back! : )
Ran an awesome 4 miles today! It was my first time with my new sneakers. (to answer someone's above question...i got the Nike Zoomeros 3)
Kdogg...i hear you are the expert...
so my initial reading on these shoes...i definately felt like I was running on clouds....however, i felt like I was running on them barefoot...does that make sence? I felt (and heard) myself pounding on the ground harder than before. Im trying to take into consideration that I was running with cross trainers before...that had a chunk of rubber under my feet...
But the good news...after the run, I barely felt tired. Usually, my legs feel quite heavy...but today..nothing.....How does one judge if a shoe is perfect for them?
13 miles for me today...about half of which was run at Tempo pace. It was definitely warm & humid. But I made it.
Lex: I think you will be fine for your Half-Marathon. Since you have only run up to 9 for your long run, just don't try to break any speed records. Relax, get into a comfortable pace, and I believe you will make it through it just fine.
D Jammer: Don't worry about not being as fast as some of the people in this forum. Most of us aren't. The good part is the fast guys and gals are very helpful to us mortals. I run simply for fun and fitness and I want to be able to do it the rest of my life. I enjoy that I can enter a forum such as this and learn from accomplished runners and young speedsters.
Happy Running!!!
heya tranquil - I think what you have is called the Zoom Vomero 3, haha. The Vomero is a very nice shoe, it is neutral (meaning no build in correction for overpronation, etc) and has a lot of cushioning (hence the reason its so expensive), which would explain why you feel like you are running on a cloud.
As for why you feel like you are slapping the ground, I am unsure, it could be a couple different things. The most common reason I have dealt with when people are experience that is that they have a change in support level from their old shoes to their new ones and they are striking the ground a bit differently when they run. Cross trainers are typically very stiff whereas running shoes are a bit more flexible, so this is a possible reason as to why you are feeling (and hearing) what you are.
My initial suggestion would be to give it a couple more days and if you don't experience any more problems, then great, if you do, then the next step might be to look into arch supports. I've had moderate success with this method. Perhaps your running store employees have some other suggestions too.
As for judging which shoe is perfect for you, well the trick is to 1.) get the right level of correction - which for you is apparently none (I'm relying on the salesperson's accuracy here) and 2.) get the right fit. My guess is that if the person who fit you knows what they are doing is that you have pretty narrow feet (Nikes typically run VERY narrow). You can play around with different shoes within the same level of correction. Shoes that are similiar to what you got (high cushioned neutrals) are the Adidas Adistar Cushion, Asics Gel Nimbus, Brooks Glycerin, Mizuno Wave Creation, New Balance 1062, Saucony Progrid Triumph (among others).
If there's anything else I can answer, let me know, haha.
As for my training, I did 15 miles today for a mid-week long run. I picked it up a little bit the last mile or mile and a half. My legs were still a bit worn down from yesterday, but I was still able to accelerate a decent amount.
Hi All, Had a worrying Personal training session today - feel very tired and light headed, this is not normal for me. Last time this happened - last year i ended up having two months off - I was over training.
After such a wonderful run on Wednesday - maybe I am just a bit tired. Hopefully I will bounce back - I have my big 32kms this sunday
Hi All.
I'm pretty new to running, quite new to mapmyrun - and totally new to the Forum. Just wanna say well done to everyone on their running!!!
Ran a Half Marathon on saturday in 1:34:06 - I was so happy. I was kinda thinking around 1:40, but thought that I would have struggled to achieve that. Was off work yesterday so went out for a 22.5mile run (3:01:08) - I'm hoping to Run Dublin (next month) in 3:30 or less, which I figure is very achievable.
Think that'll do me now until friday evening. Hope everyone is ok.
Boyjame and GraemeC - welcome to the madhouse. GraemeC - 1:34 for a half and you're new to running? Awesome start. 3:30 for a marathon is very respectable; if you did the half feeling strong and have put in the miles in training (3hrs for 22.5 miles sounds like you have definitely been doing the miles) then 3:30 is definitely do-able. I was reasonably consistently doing halfs (halves?) in around 90 minutes and most of my marathon times were around the 3:30 mark. According to certain charts, a 90 - 95 minute half time should translate to roughly a 3:10 - 3:25 full, although it never quite worked for me over the full distance. Good luck.
Took yesterday off and got back on the horse today with 13km, with around 5km at tempo.
Hey all, I'm back! Been so busy working at night so no posting - but definitely plenty of running still happening during the mornings. Ran 36kms Sunday in 3hrs so feeling great going into the marathon. Did 10kms this morning how far should I go this Sunday? Supposed to do 32 but thinking of going with 36 again.....
Cant wait for the marathon. Must say that my new 2XU elite tights are so much more comfortable than the skins...also can anyone tell me the cheapest site to buy Kayanos?
Hi all.
I onto my last 10 days before Berlin. Two sick 1 year olds at home which is actually good...better now than next week!!! So I will take it very easy (bit sick myself) to make sure I am fit as a fiddle next week.
Harro08. Enjoy the taper... I was suprised how much my motivation is lacking the taper (I'm still doing the training of course) - It's just seems to have dragged on for ages. And since there is nothing one can actually do in the taper (no major challanges) other than stay injury free, I feel like I am just going through the motions.
Anyway.... I seem to be unable to run much slower than 5mins/km on a flat course without loosing form so most of my short runs now are at "marathon pace"......
Safety pinning the gels to the inside of my shorts seems to work pretty well....so I think i am "good to go" as you Americans say.
GraemeC1983 - I am probably doing Dublin next year with some uni mates. I'll look forward to hearing a race report!
Pappypage - what week of the intermediate II are you on now?
Fricster - are you running Melb. marathon as well?
Hello everybody.
I'm new to the forum, though i am using MapMyRun for about 5 months now, and i am finding it an amazing tool for runners. I'm from Brazil (so excuse my english), and i've started to run in january 2008.
At first all i could do was short 3km runs, but after getting use to the efforts i am now used to train in 10-15km every sunday, and short 6km trainings 2 times during the week. I don't push a lot during the week because i go running at 9pm and i'm already tired from the whole day of working and studying...
I've just participated in my first race, the Nike+ Human Race 10K, and it was really fun... i finished in 58mins, which i found reasonable for my training, and wasn't too tired at the end... it was most of a fun race with friends running along than a real effort to finish in a good time.
Well, thats all! Yesterday i did my usual 6km in 28mins, and now i'll be running 10K saturday morning in a tough climbing circuit in my university.
Nice to meet you all!
Welcome to the fun, thomas, boyjame & GraemeC! And thanks for the encouragement, Gilly. I wasn't really feeling down about my mortal speed, because I like to think that I am old enough to know better than to kill myself by trying to run too fast!
Anyway, ran a 4 mile tempo with a mile-ish before and after for warm up and cool down. My tempo pace was a mere mortal 7:33, but it was a good workout for me.
I used to run listening to music, but I felt like my affinity for punk rock would "artificially" crank up my speed. Then I read a safety article on road running and the dangers of having music crammed into your ears (as opposed to listening for cars). I'm sure everyone has their own opinions on the safety v. hazards, but I now run listening to the music in my own head. Which works fine until you get stuck on a song and can't quite figure it all out! Then I concentrate too much on figuring it out and I mess up my pace. Oh well, that's just my own little quirk!
10 Miles for me today. I faced a little tightness in the upper thigh/groin muscle area, toward the end of the run. I guess I must stretch more.
Happy Running!
Hi All,
Been a while since I have posted but I have not stopped running (okay, maybe scaled it back for a while but I am back at it for longer distances). I ran 5 miles today at lunch and made pretty good time (41:30) which is about normal for me lately. I don't have a lot of time during the day to commit to longer runs but I do want to mix things up a bit. I am hoping to drop my time a bit and make my runs more interesting (yes, I already listen to music) so I am hoping for some suggestions for speed work (note that I am running on the streets and not near any tracks at all)and since I do it at lunch I don't have an extravagent amount of time to do elaborate things (like go and find a track) but I do want to increase my fitness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (I'm looking at you Chiggy, KDogg, Ex-K1w1...please).
GrantB, I'll echo what chiggy said - fartleks. I was gonna type it earlier, but wanted to wait for someone else to say it so I didn't have to explain it (yes I run a lot, yes I am super lazy).
Good luck in your races tomorrow guys, you both are gonna roll on some kids, I'm anxious to see your results.
Today I did 5x1000 at tempo pace with 90 seconds rest on the track. 3:25, 3:17, 3:17, 3:18, 3:18. After that I got a little crazy and decided to do some timed 200s. 32, 32, 31, 30. The last 30 would probably have been a 28 or 29, but some dudes were walking on the track in the first lane and were too dumb to realize its proper track etiquette to move for runners so I had to move out to like the 4th lane. My current lacking of speed is kind of pitiful, in high school I ran 25 second 200s easy. Now I'm in way better shape, but just don't have the fast twitch anymore.
Hi All, - Welcome to the new forum folk, it is a great community to be part of - we are getting very international now!! I ran an easy 5kms this morning before breaky - trying to have fresh legs for Sunday.
Welcome back Harro - I can recommend an ebay site - who seem to sell lots of Asics for pretty cheap - thay are based in Melbourne - so are quick at delivery ( I am guessing you are a local to me???) look for "Uptempoair" on ebay
Simmo - I am doing the melbourne on the 12th. Getting very, very nervous and excited all at once!! I have my longest run this week, of 32kms - which I am starting to carb load for today - by eating out at Bistro Vue (for those that don't know a very fine place indeed) I carry my Gu's - which turns them into a kind of hot chocolate by the time I need them - eeww...
I am looking forward to the taper - although I suspect that once I get there, I may suffer taper madness as described by Hal Higdon - Yikes!
Good Luck Chiggy, and Steve 921 - I am looking forward to hearing how you both go! Inspires me
to hear the stories of your achievements - very impressive.
Hello one and all.. welcome new folk!
Thanks Gilly, I'm going to aim for a 10 miler tomorrow and then a 12 miler next week, back down to 10 and then one week taper. That is of course depending on my hip. I think that should do me proud. To be honest I am struggling to get my 4th run in each week (I do kickboxing twice a week and usually a big hike once a week) - is that 4th run critical to training for 1/2 marathon distance race?
GrantB - it's all about the fartleks, I quite enjoy them. Especially if you have to just run on the streets.
Was planning on a trail run today, went kickboxing this morning and this afternoon just got tired and had no motivation. So I joined my running groups Thursday run. Mile block repeats, nothing exciting but it worked with my motivation levels. Was kind of nice to run with others too. Did four miles at 8:10 pace, so pretty happy. Hip was a little sore but better than it has been.
Lex: I think you definitely need to get that 4th weekly run in, especially if you plan to race consistently. Try running early, before you have a chance to get tired and lose motivation. Kickboxing, etc. is great; but the best and (I believe) only way to really improve your running is by running. By the way, what's the weather like in Vancouver this time of year?
Ericjacquie: Those half marathons are good training for your full marathon. But I would definitely start tapering 3 days before your half and a week before your full. That doesn't mean no running, just scaled back the miles and intensity.
10 miles for me today....Battled through some sore muscles. 15 mile long run tomorrow.
happy Running!
Just got back from my long run, 10.5 miles in 1hr37mins (9:16 pace). Pretty tired. I took an energy gel at 6 miles. My legs were still tired towards the end but I persevered. Had a few hills including the hell-hill (Dempsey Road - a 200m climb over just more than 1km). Still haven't made it all the way up hell-hill in one go! It's a lot cooler here and I actually felt a bit of a chill on the way home.
Reasonably happy with the run and feeling more confident about the 1/2 now. Will make a real effort to get that 4th run in each week. To be honest I actually find that in terms of motivation and enjoyment 3 runs each week is optimal for me. When I go for 4 I find it feels like a bit of a chore and that just makes my whole focus and motivation slacken off. I guess I just need to battle those psychological demons. Thanks for the input Gilly - here in Vancouver we had been enjoying a second summer but fall seems to have hit home with a vengeance this week.
BBQ tonight - (in honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day!!) so going to have a lovely day of rest tomorrow. Maybe go for a hike or something... will go for fourth run on Sunday.
sweet, good job Steve. You got the whole season in front of you to drop time and if you keep working hard, it is gonna drop.
Not to embarrass chiggy, but on the TTU cross country site, there is a big picture of him running, haha. I was checking on the site to see how the meet turned out, but they don't have results up yet.
10 easy miles for me today, I ran the course for my race tomorrow. Looks like it could be a fast run if I wanted it to be. A nice little six miler, should be sweet
hey everyone...
Another 4 miles today. 3 weeks of running and increasing mileage each week. I feel so great....and look forward to the next mileage in the following week, rather than dreading it. Sunday I plan on doing a long bike ride then Tuesday..up to 5 miles!
KDogg-Thanks for everything about the sneaker advice! Today, they felt better...less pounding. I gotta say..the past two times, when I finish the run, i don't feel heavy legs at all...I almost don't even feel like I ran at all....though I'm definately running at a faster and faster pace each time.
I still have the pain in my foot though. (did I post about this already?) All my pain is in my left foot..and my right foot feels normal. Upon gait analysis, it was determined that my right foot pronotes pretty bad and my left foot is normal. I feel, however, that im running on the left bone of my left foot...and it hurts. I wear orthodics, which is why the store told me to get a neutral shoe The suggessted I keep the orthotic out of the left foot. No change though....I don't really know what to do about that. Ever heard of this?
haha yea kdogg im glad you didnt see the results of the race, it would embarass me far more than that picture. I wont even post a time, let's just say it was a good bit slower than even my tempo runs haha. If your really curious ill probably put it down in my log tomorrow, but for now i have to get to sleep. I've got a long run to do in about 6 hours.
great job Steve keep it up!
Yeah, nice racing Steve, great season start.
Easy 7km yesterday. This morning was a 2hr 15 long run which I set to take in a few hills. Covered 23.5k and my quads burned! Hamstrings very tight afterward as well. Must change my simple hill repeats to hill bounding for a couple of weeks. Or at least start doing some Hindu squats again.
Thanks ex-k1w1 - I guess a marathon is a race of 2 halves, the second half by far the hardest. I'll gladly take a 3:30 any time though for sure.
SimmoT - I'll put a race report up no problem. From what I've read the crowds on the streets are meant to be amazing. It will be a long day for me as I'm not staying down in Dublin - so the day will begin at 4:15am with a 4hour bus journey - and the same back after the marathon.
Just over 14 miles today in 1:45:22 (7.31 pace) - legs were still feelin a bit sore after the 22.5 miles clocked on Wednesday. Tonight I'll be putting the feet up and hoping to see Team Europe put some blue on the board - may have a few bottles as well.
One quick question, I'm a Asics GT2120 man - and I think they're discontinued now as I've tried lookin everywhere. Does anyone else use this shoe and any ideas where I could get a hold of a pair online?
Have a nice weekend all !!!!!
yea, my race didn't go so hot either. It was a 6 mile run and I was expecting to go sub 31:00 at the worst. I ran 32:15, which is actually a slower pace than what I do tempos at. So chiggy, apparently both of us sucked this weekend, ugh. The only good that came out of this was that I won and got a pretty sweet bag (and that I got a decent threshold workout).
I didn't feel like I was working hard, but I didn't feel great either. It was just one of those blah runs.
14miles this morning, i accidentally set my alarm for 6pm instead of 6am so i woke up at 9 and had to do my run alone. Warmed up the first mile then dropped down to a quicker pace for the next 10 (65min at 11miles) and jogged in the last 3. Didn't feel too great again.
well at least you won and got prizes kdogg haha, all i got was embarassed.
Graeme- the 2120 has been discontinued and you can still find it online and at a discounted price (just do a shopping search on google) but in limited sizes. It has been replaced with the 2130 which is practically the same shoe but just a different style. So if you cant find the 2120 in your size this is probably your best bet.
Cheers chiggy - yeah I'm a size 11 which seem to be pretty hard to get hold of. My current pair should see me through mid October. The 2130 is probably the most obvious switch. I'm just always hesitant about change - definately sticking with Asics though regardless.
Kdogg - blastin' pace - 32:15 for 6 miles, well done!! What's your PB over that distance?
KDogg: Congrats on your win. 32:15 for a 6 mile race and you call that "one of those blah runs." Simply amazing. We mortals bow at your feet.
Tranquil: Nice work. It is wonderful when you look forward to your runs. Non-runner would never understand that.
Happy Running!
Wow I havent been on here for... over a year I think. hrmm. Today I went for a 13km run in an hour and 3 minutes... I felt really slow and dehydrated by the end... I just moved into a new area and im not used to this many (steep!) hills!! and Im out of shape lol. Hopefully things get better.
Jen
took the day off today, first rest day in weeks. Tomorrow gonna do an easy 4-6 miles and then on monday I have a dual meet, should be fun. Mostly likely wont be setting any personal bests monday since theres not much competition, but ill try.
Hi All,
Great racing Kdogg, Steve and Chiggy.
I ran my longest run yet - and final long one before the marathon. I logged 32.5kms today. it was REALLY hard. It took me 3hours:19 mins. My husband and kids met me at intervals along the way - which was good, but I think that I did not have enough water - as by about the 26th km I started to feel very woozy and weird. I pushed through - but man I ended up in a shuffle by 30kms. It was a sad ending to a reasonable start.
Anyone with hints or tips on the best way to avoid that wall would be great! It is hard to imagine getting to 42 after today - it knocked my socks off.
My first long run since my half marathon 10.09 miles. I took it slow because of the knee - completed in exactly 2 hours. Knee felt a little weak but did not bother me much.
3 easy miles today at 6:40 pace, then a 12 mile bike ride. Felt really good even though my calves are a little tight. Cross Country tri-meet tomorrow, hope to to good but probably wont result in a p.r especially on the confusing course im doing tomorrow.
had a great bike ride today...22.75 miles! I got completely lost in the depths of new jersey (i never heard of Dayton before!) but great all in all. I didnt feel tired at the end at all.....i wonder if thats good or bad though...
Im increasing to 5 miles this tuesday and Thursday...then...My first 5k in 8 years is this Saturday...Im really excited! :)
Hi Everyone - I hope you are all having a good weekend. I had the most wonderful day of hedonism yesterday, mostly spent on the sofa, scoffing comfort food, watching movies and having afternoon naps : )
Today was back to the grind! Did an ace 4 miler and felt great, first mile was easy, then two miles tempo then fourth mile at pace. Felt really good doing it - very strong, lots of energy, slight twinge in hip every now and then but rare. Very happy indeed. I think my 10.5 miler exorcised some demons for me!
Well I did my final "long run" of the taper...a nice even 12kms, which has left me with niggle in my right shin and hip.... WTF!??!?!? This is my first hint of an injury after 3 or 4 months of training 6 days before the marathon, plus a cold that I still haven't shaken...argh....
Anyway, I'm sure it's nothing I can't fix with a bit of iboprufen gel, and some R&R.....
fricster , how much did you eat on that long run? Maybe you ran out of fuel. I have found that I need to start taking gels pretty early on in the run (well before I feel hungry) so I don't go through any rough patches. Like the last long run I did (32kms) I took a gel after 10kms, and 18kms etc etc, so I really never had any dips in blood sugar....
Plus I ALWAYS have vegemite toast the morning of a long run.... despite being the best tasting spread ever invented by man, it the salt really seems to help me retain some water with all that sweating one does.
GraemeC1983, They sound like good 1/2 mara times. i reckon 3:30 is a goer for Dublin. 4 hour bus ride... That is going to be a big day ...
Hi all,
Ran 36kms Sunday in 2hrs 54min which I was delighted with. Felt good most the way although a bit stiff today. Still a 10 min improvement on last weeks long run. Fartleks for me tomorrow at the tan might hurt a little!
Ended up finding a pair of Kayano 14's on Ebay at $74US what a bargain! Even with shipping only cost me $136au! Thanks for the tip fricster! Better than paying $200+ in stores!
I've been gone for about 3 weeks on a trip to Europe (northern Italy for 2 weeks and Prague for 1 week - half business, half pleasure). I did some awesome runs while there - here's a few links to my favorite routes during the trip
A six miler in Riva del Garda:
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/italy/riva-del-garda/156221950946
A seven miler around Prague (lots of hill time)
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/czech-republic/praha/738083361513
A 9 miler around Florence.
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/italy/firenze/522222667298
I put in about 110 miles in the 21 days I was in Europe (including some walks with my wife) but managed to gain about 4-5 lbs, while I was there (too much good Czech food and beer probably ;) ) I also lost a bit of my endurance/speed since I didn't run as consistently as I'd like while I was traveling. It's hard to get exercise/vacation and some work in all on the same trip especially with travel time eating up some of the time.
I've got the Leavenworth Marathon Relay (a 6 man team) coming up in just under 2 weeks and I want to run my section at a 7:30 pace or better. This AM (with the jet lag still working on me) I was only able to do 2 miles or so at that pace so I've got some work to do over the next couple of weeks.
did a pretty easy 6 miles yesterday after 3 days off :(
It's been a rough training period for this marathon...so many interuptions. Anyway, the marathon's just under 5 weeks away...so almost to the taper period.
