I stopped running three years ago due to knee pain. An MRI showed all was good. I recently was fitted with soft custom-made orthotics.

Walking is perfect and running appears to be very good. I've done five 4km runs to date - far more than I could have done previously. Having said I can run fine now, there is some discomfort in surrounding muscles. Though this could be due to muscles that haven't been used for running in a long time, could this be my leg muscles getting used to the new angle? If so, does anyone know how long I should expect this discomfort to last?

    Thanks,
    Mark.

When I was first fitted w/custom orthodics about 6 years ago, it was very difficult to get used to them. I experienced a lot of pain in my feet, ankles, knees and lower back. This lasted for about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks. My ortho said this was completely normal. Of course, now I love them, and couldn't walk/run without them. Hope this helps! :)

I would give it no more than 2 or 3 weeks before going back to the ortho and getting them checked. Mine had to be altered slightly after I ran in them to get them perfectly correct. Also sometimes you have to change shoes to get the orthodics to work completely correctly - bites after spending $500 on orthodics to have to lay down another $200 on shoes but hey I can run now!

I was thinking of trying orthotics, but the idea is so foreign to me.  I'm gonna ask a few questions that are likely really obvious, but I want to be certain with advice from other runners.

If I only experience pain in one foot, do I wear the orthotics in both shoes?

If I am in training for a 10k which is in 2.5 weeks, should I wait to ease in to the orthotics because it seems that most people seem to feel some discomfort in the beginning with them?

I don't have a lot of money to spend on them, would a generic pair bought from a drug store show improvements, or at least show me that this is the right way to correct current discomforts?
