"Baby steps" has been my mantra!  I just started running for the first time ever and I'm literally hooked!  I've always heard about a natural high but I seriously can't get enough.  I started really easy - running for 5 minutes without stopping on the treadmill.  I know that sounds wimpy but it was the first of many successes.

I'm still a total amateur since I've been running less than a month but I'm determined to continue to improve - community definitely helps and I'm eager to share my little success stories!  Would love any suggestions or words of encouragement...adjusting my diet will be the next big hurdle - anyone have some quick & easy recipes??

    Ashley,

If you're going to really get into running, the biggest thing I found is to get the right shoes. And don't think that because you might be able to find a few good articles on selecting them that you can do it yourself (I'm talking from experience here!) Good shoes will help you keep on running, and it will definitely be more fun.

You definitely have the right idea to take baby steps. The only thing I would recommend is that after your 5 minutes of running, slow down to a brisk walk and keep on moving. If you feel that you can start running again after a few minutes, go ahead. Whatever you do, keep on moving for 30 - 40 minutes. That way your body gets used to moving for that length of time. As you keep doing it, increase your walk times. There's a really good plan for gradually getting into running by run/walking, and I think it is at Runner's World.

For recipes ... well, my wife calls me a goat, so I'll eat anything. My current breakfast is one that I learned from the Abs Diet. It is basically an egg stirred up, 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal, 1 tsp of vanilla whey protien powder, 1 tsp of flax seed, 1 Tbl of sliced almonds and a cup of milk. Nuke 2 minutes and top with 3 spoonfuls of yogurt and sliced up banana. It's a lot of stuff that is good for you and it fills you up for the most important meal of the day.

     Good luck, and keep running!
