    Hey Guys!

Here's a question for you.....I was off road the other day and to make a long story short, I smashed in to a tree going full blast.  My handlbar whipped around and jabbed my in the upper right thigh.  I was so pumped up, I pretty much climbed back on my bike, fixed my mangled shifters as good as I could and kept going for about two more hours.

When I finally did stop and take measure of my injuries, I could tell the lick my leg took was serious and it was already swelling.  I knew my leg wasn't broken but I was sure that the handlebar went all the way down to the bone separating the fat and muscle.

Anyway, I had nasty looking bruise for about 2 weeks that slowly migrated down my leg and disappated.  But, I now have this HUGE bulge on my thigh that seems to be full of fluid.  The best way I can describe it is a silicone boob stuck to my leg.

Does anyone know what this is and have you ever had anything like this?  I hate to go to the doctor for a bruise but it's been about 3 weeks and it's still there?

Sounds like a good reason to see a doctor to me

See the doc as soon as possible. It could require draining to aid the healing process/prevent permanent damage to the tissue. All the best!

Interesting. A friend of mine took a spill in a spin class a couple of weeks ago and has the same experience.  Not a "boob" maybe but she still has a nice size knott on her leg.  Could be that's the way it is. But it never hurts to check up on it.  Ya know, you could always call a health line and ask someone if you don't want to actually go into the doctors.  At least that way you could get some advice and know what direction to proceed from there.

     Good Luck. Alma

Go and see a doctor.  When the doctor has looked at it post back here to tell us what they say.  Good luck - Hope you are ok.

i took a shot to my shin playing soccer in high school.  i thought my leg broke but it swelled up like a balloon, almost looked like there was a flattened out tennis ball on my shin.  there was a bubble/bruise on my shin for at least a month and half and theres still a considerable amount of bone built up there, this was about 3 years ago.  i don't know about the thigh though since its all muscles.  i had mine looked at by a doctor, definitely won't hurt until the doctor presses on it.

I suggest that you see the doctor too, but don't let him drain it. . .if he suggests it. . .until you get a second or third opinion from a surgeon or vascular specialist.

The same thing happened to me when on my bike. I feel hard to the side against the pavement. The swelling stayed there for a week so I went to the doctor. His immediate course of action was to drain it.

But the back pressure of the "bulge" against the internal bleeding area was what kept additional bleeding in-check. The pressure was released when he drained it, so the internal bleeding become excessive beyond words. The leg swelled like I had elephantitis, and I experienced mortal pain. I had to be admitted to the hospital and kept overnight for observation.

I then went to a vascular surgeon who saw me a total of three times, checking my recovery. He finally told me that the lump will never go completely away, but I should see him if I wanted it removed. I still have it after three years.

Bottom line in your case: please consult with a specialist, but if he or she wants to drain the swelling absolutely get more opinions before proceeding.

    Take care,

    David

The bulge is likely going to calcify if left un attended.  David's caution sounds prudent.  Have a vascular surgeon look at it if you have one available.  Over time I would expect the bulge to harden, and in some cases may shrink or be treatable with PT to shrink it.

Be aware that pieces of the clot may be prone to break free, which can lead to pulmonary embolism or stroke (worst case scenario).  Other complications include sepsis (infection).  Get checked... SOON.

And by the way, welcome to mountain biking!
