What's up, friends? Welcome to those of you new to my email list. Make sure to check running.meetup.com/134 for more details on the Road Runner Sports Wednesday Group Run and other unaffiliated free group runs.
This month we've been using the Wednesday run as a training run for the Nike Human Race, a 10k on Sunday, Aug. 31. The details have been a bit fuzzy about that run, but they're finally becoming clearer. It will be the biggest sporting event ever with more than 1 million people participating around the world. There will be 25 main host cities, the closest being LA, where Nike will hold a big event.
Here's what you need to know:
We're giving away Nike Sportbands, which use the Nike+ technology to track your pace and distance, at the Wednesday run this month. Also, I'm holding all of the raffle entries for the month and using them to raffle off a pair of Nike shoes at the end of the month.
For the race itself, you can go up to LA, you can just run on your own with your Nike+ technology (Sportband or iPod) and then upload your info to nikeplus.com or you can find a local host site. Road Runner Sports will be a local host site. If you're going to run with us, you might register here: https://www.signmeup.com/site/reg/register.aspx?fid=G62V9K7
Two important things to note about running with us:
1. You must run with Nike+ technology. The whole point of the run is for everyone to upload their info to nikeplus.com to have proof of the number of participants across the world.
2. We will not have police support for the course that morning, so, depending on the number of entrants, we might run 12+ loops around the RRS facilities. Otherwise, we will run a couple of loops in the neighborhood, trying to avoid traffic as much as possible. We will have a water station or two and volunteers out on the course. If you're going to run with us, look at the event as an opportunity to participate in something massive and groundbreaking for the global running community instead of a chance at PR. Chances are our course will not be conducive to the event being a race as much as a fun run.
I just added some new people to the list, so please refer to the original email below. Also, here are some details I left out:
The run from RRS on Aug. 31 starts at 8 a.m. and is free. The Sportbands are being raffled off (two per week) at the Wednesday runs. They're not being given to everyone. You must provide your own Nike+ equipment. The Sportband costs $60 or the receiver kit for your iPod (nano only) costs $30. If you have a Nike+ shoe, you can put the chip underneath the left shoe insole. Otherwise you can buy a pouch/holder online to attach the chip to your shoelaces.
