Well,  I couldn't find any Arizona groups on here so I made one.   If you happened to find it and joined,  welcome!  Hopefully we'll see you out on the routes one of these days.  Maybe if enough people get on here we can have training groups.

Hey Paul, I run in suburban South Tempe - along the canals and research park mostly. Tell me about the areas you run - I'm not familiar with the trails in that area. Are they rugged? Big changes of elevation? ( read that: are there giant hills that will kick my wimpy little butt? Would I need fancy "trail shoes"?) :-) -Julie

I run the canals out in east mesa quite bit, but also make the trails of Usery Mountain park a regular workout as well. One of my favorites when I am doing triathlon training is the Butcher Jones trail all the way out to burro cove and back (followed by a refreshing swim in Butcher Jones cove). I also occasionally mix in South Mountain trails when I don't ride my bike into work.

Usery  has a really nice collection of trails from flat as a canal almost to really rugged and steep.  I am surprised I don't see more runners out there. It also has drinking fountains available that you can plan your run around which is really nice (and something South Mountain doesn't have).

The Butcher Jones trail has a mega hill in the middle of it but the rest is sheer bliss.

Hey, sounds great! I'll have to take a drive up that way and explore. It's amazing to think there's trails in this area where there's actually places to swim! Nice. What's the roundtrip mileage when you take Butcher Jones all the way out to burro cove and back? It's hard to tell if that's one of the mapped runs, because they don't have the landmarks listed...

It is around 5.5 miles or so.  There is one spot where you have to duck under some sticker bushes so be careful with synthetic shirts,  I caught my tri-top on one and almost ripped it.  It is basically the first 5.5 miles of the Butcher Jones My Tri Run route that is listed under the group routes.
