Once you get north of Canton Hwy (i.e. 20) there is low traffic as you're now out into the countryside. The loop that crests with the climb up to Burnt Mountain has been characterized by many cyclists as more difficult than the three gap ride in the North Georgia mountains. The climbing is relentless with many short steep climbs all the way up to the base of Burnt Mountain. The base is the right turn onto Grandview off of Cove Road. The stairway begins once you turn onto Hwy 136 and is about a five mile climb up into the sky. The scenery is beautiful as you watch the road climb the mountain to the top. Once you crest you have about a five mile descent. It's deceiving because once you get to the bottom you think your done climbing but the climbing continues up Steve Tate Road until you tie the knot at the intersection of Steve Tate and Cove Road. From this point forward the ride is all down hill to the finish. You'll have about another thirty-five miles to the finish and will be counting every mile until you can lay down and relax.
