The travel is gravel/grass/dirt only for the first 100 yards and then is paved for the rest of the route. Use this route to view the Blue Angels perform over Lake Washington in late July or August. Historically, I-90 is closed to motor traffic, so you can even ride your bike out onto the bridge deck. Be warned the heat bouncing off the pavement can be intense. Alternatively there is a good water/bathroom stop, with flush toilets, just before the end of the route, and at the end of the route there is a nice little waterfront grassy park with many grassy fields and a play area for kids. AS an older bike rider who's been off my bike for 10 years, I found the hills on this ride challenging, even difficult, on my 3-speed cruiser, on this record hot day of 97 degrees. I'm sure would have been easier with a road bike on a cooler day. In my defense, I was told the route was only 2 miles and I was unprepared for the distance and the heat, especially being so many years out of shape. We also road with children ages 8-10 who likewise complained that the ride was harder than they thought it would be. They absolutely didn't want to make the 4 mile return trip.
