location: Seattle, Washington distance: 9.39 mi. | Route Type: Bike Ride Tags: Big Climb, Hilly, Lake, Moderate Climb, Park, Pavement And Sidewalk, Urban created by: description: Barely a warm up before a hill starts to Green Lake. Then the route follows Green Lake on the East side, where a 20 mile avg can be substained until there is a 1/4 to 1/3 mile of up hill till 45th street. Then its all down hill on Stoneway, where speeds around 30 mph (give take 4 mph) can be reached. The commute takes anywhere from 16 1/2 minutes to 19 1/2 minutes depending on the intensity. The ride back is a bit more of a grind as its mostly up hill. Generally 22 1/2 minutes to 25 minutes, again, depending on the intensity - or sometimes depending on the wind that seems to come down stoneway. location: Seattle, Washington distance: 54.16 mi. | Route Type: Bike Ride created by: description: This is probably the most direct and least hilly route into Port Townsend. I like the ride from Ballard to Edmonds through Richmond Beach. Except for a short section on Greenwood Ave the route is low traffic. Once past the community college and a short climb the views across the sound open up.

The ride from Kingston to the Hood Canal Bridge can have some traffic, and there's not much shoulder for most of it, but it's always been uneventful.

Crossing the Hood Canal Bridge just take your time and move steadily along. You can time the traffic at the beginning by waiting for the light, so that you aren't starting out with a long line of traffic following you. But the bridge is too long to sprint and beat all the traffic so just take your time. There are a few spans where the roadway is metal grating. You can avoid riding on this by staying to the right and riding on the solid metal "shoulder". In the middle of the bridge there is a diagonal expansion seam with large bolts sticking up out of it. When you reach this, try to time the traffic so you can briefly take the lane and cross the seam perpendicularly.

Hwy 104 is ok to ride on, not pleasant but it has a wide shoulder. The ride up Hwy 19 / Hwy 20 has a lot of traffic also but has an ok shoulder for most of it. If I remember correctly there is a section in the middle where the shoulder is very narrow.

The route as I have it mapped ends at the pizza window along the waterfront.
