Run Description
Part of Anchorage's Big Wild Life Runs, held the third Thursday in August.
http://www.anchoragerunningclub.org/bwlr/index.html
Starting on 6th Avenue next to the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, go west (away from Town Square Park and the Wyland whale mural) to H street. Turn right (north), and continue to 4th Avenue. Turn left (west), and continue to Snow City Cafe, where you'll turn right (north) and follow L Street along the curve until it becomes 3rd Avenue (now heading east). Left (north) on H street, and down the only significant hill of the course. At the bottom, turn left (west), and follow 2nd Avenue, which will transition into the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Turnaround is about .5 miles down the trail; if you go through a tunnel, you've gone too far. Route back to the finish is the same, except at the top of the Christensen hill, go straight (south) on H Street until you reach 6th. Left (east) on 6th will take you back to the start/finish area.
This is an urban course, pretty flat except for the hill on Christensen. Coastal Trail is a paved bike trail, with well-traveled dirt lanes on either side. Remainder of course is city streets.
Snow City Cafe, the official sponsors of this 5K race, is a nice breakfast/lunch place; they're popular among Anchorage's running crowd for their vegetarian-friendly menu and location just off of the Coastal Trail. (There's a stairwell at 4th Ave. & L St. that'll drop you onto the trail)
