Up at 5am for a 16 mile long run. Ran it in 2 hours 37 minutes about a 9:50/mile pace. Ran with my brother and we talked back and forth the whole time, so I was never winded or tired, but my legs felt heavy on the hills after about 12 miles, but all in all finished well. After running 16 miles today (my longest run ever), 26.2 miles is going to be a challenge, but I've got 13 weeks left to train.

I am experimenting with what I eat before and during my long runs. Before my run this morning I had a banana, toast with peanut butter, about 16 oz. of water and a GU packet. During the run I stopped and walked while getting a few sips of gatorade at miles 4, 8, and 12. I also had another GU packet at 8 miles. My stomach/digestion has felt fine following this routine so far on my long runs. Any advice in this department from more experienced runners. I use the banana/strawberry GU packets because they do not have any caffeine.

    Rest day tomorrow . . . YEAH!!!!

Very bad day for me today after two good days, but I suppose I have just started. No firm exercise and a chinese take away on day 3. Oh dear! But on the flip side I have done a 10hr day walking on my feet almost non stop, so I guess that balances it out a little!

You all sound like youre doing really well!

KDogg...thanks for the recommendation on the speed training. I am definately, like always so far, going to take your advice and try and keep it fun.

On that note...I had the crappiest race today.  I think I jumped it too quick in the beginning for the heat/humidity.  I really didn't pay enough attention to how hot it was, because I was late and was running around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to get all the pre-race stuff done.  I did an 8:20 on the first mile (dumb), then a 9:05 (which would have been a normal/somewhat easy pace for me) on the second, then ended up having to walk for almost a mile.  I got a sick stich (which I haven't had in a long while) was nauseous, dizzy, starting getting chills as I was nearing the finish line, got a sick headache in the back of my head...it was all bad.

After walking a few minutes (which I never had to do during a race so far...arg!!), sipping on water after the water-stop at the 2-mark, I jogged/walked up until the four mile mark.  I then ran the last mile and hoped I would live to tell the tale of my aches and yuckies.  My mom made me go to the first aid tent and I got an iced rag on my neck and face from the nurse.  I sipped on my water and tried not to throw up or pass out.  The chills were really weird, because I knew I was overheated, but all of a sudden I would get really cold and get goosebumps for two or three seconds, then I would be hot again...yeah, it was all bad.

Somehow, I ended up with a time of 53:04.  I guess considering how crappy I felt, I should be happy with that...but my brother beat me (and for once, I am in better shape than him), so I was sad.  Whatever, I was dumb and should have paced myself based on the heat.  Sorry for all the negativity in my post...I'll feel better tomorrow.

got to our training spot at 7:30 this morning (takes me an hour to get there) and it started storming nasty style about 7 minutes before i got here. there was lightning so they called it off. i went and sat at a coffee shop and read a book for a while and then hit the running store and it cleared up. so, i headed back out and did my 10 miles all by myself in 2:30:08. was rough - i walked quite a bit - but i completed 10 freaking miles!!! WAHOOOOOOO! i'm totally on top of the world. now that i've let that out, i'll say that i am uber sore - my hips are really sore. thank goodness tomorrow is a rest day. enjoy your sunday everyone!! =) and better luck next time burgalurg. last saturday i did my run in the middle of the day (stupid of me). by the time i got home i was so nauseous that i knocked out for like 2 hours. the heat is crazy on your body.

Wow, all you people piling on the miles.  I'm definitely envious.  I hate having been on track and having to start again.  Had most of last week not running again while on site.  Hopefully, I'm home for an extended period and can build back up.

LexB - I noticed a comment a few days back about not being able to map your runs through wooded areas or parkland.  Is that with or without the Satellite / Hybrid view?  I didn't realise for several months after I started mapping runs around a local park that if I turned on the Hybrid view, I could see most of the paths very clearly!  Silly me!

My one run last week was about 6k at a very relaxed pace.  Back into it tomorrow.

17 mile long run - I probably could have kept the 20 mile long run streak alive, but its my estimation that you probably shouldn't be doing 20 milers every weekend (unless you are super elite or an ultra guy/gal)

108 for the week with a decently high quality day on Thursday, I'm pretty happy with that.

1st time reaching 16.24 miles today.  First 8miles and last 3miles were into the wind of 21mph with gusts up to 34mph.  That kind of sucked, but at least there weren't any Deer Flies.  Still on track for Oct. Marathon.

Great Job Aldiara!  Walking or not you still finished 10miles.

Dan, I know your pain.  My BMI still labels me a over-weight and I find that I tend to go through shoes faster than the every 250 to 300 miles that shoes should survive.  I too wear Steel Toes Boots for work; minus the back-up gun.  I found that changing the boots I wear helped, plus buying a new pair every 6 months or so.  I've now found that Timberland's Pro Series seem to be the perfect fit for me.  Plus, like running shoes try them a 1/2 size larger than normal.  Another thing is because of my weight I find myself icing my shins, ankles, and knees after every long run over 8 or 10 miles.  IBprofen helps too.   Last I've found that starting slowly in my long runs and ramping up my pace as I get to mile 2 or 3 seems to help.  I find that I can maintain a faster pace for a long time that way.  Hope some of this might helps.

Good running to all this week

Nice one Aldiara! You must feel on top of the world

I hit a 10 miler today too - well it was actually 10.7 miles - did it in 1hr50 which (about 10.10pace) which I am pretty pleased with. I actually think my pace was faster than that but I got slowed to a walk on some pretty gnarly trails and a couple of bad a** hills - dempsey again (my nemesis - I shall kick it's butt one of these days but it's just so big and steep! Again I had to pause 3 times to get myself together - I reckon if I had someone doing it with me I could do it in one) - and the climb up out of the valley the trail was in. Plus of course the steep down hills that slowed me down - or rather I had to slow down on. I may try a flat 10 miler sometime and see how I fair.

My legs felt like lead towards the end - I'm pleased that I kept going. It was hot in the sun but a nice cool breeze - I am very dehydrated though! Icing and rehydrating now and then off to buy new shoes (thanks for the tips Kdogg - you rock!!!)

ExKiwi - I have tried the hybrid map but some of these trails are under a lot of cover so it is hard to make out the path - it does help a bit tho - you're totally right!

I bailed on my Friday run as I went for a hike and did some kickboxing instead. The 'hike' we did was almost full on mountain climbing - pretty much near vertical 700m climb over 1.8k distance up the Stawamus Chief in Squamish. BRUTAL. But awesome views!!

Good day for me today after a bad day yesterday. My 3rd run so far, and I lasted for a further 10mins than normal which I'm really happy about. And going by the walk run thing, I managed to last 3mins (not much I know, but a lot for me!) without stopping, which I was incredibly pleased about.

16 mile long run for me too today. Felt ok, running with a back back (camel back) filled with water is convienient but I can feel the difference. Ate some jelly beans whilst running. Looking forward to a 17 miler next week, then it's a milage reduction week which will be nice....

Know what you mean about the 26 miler remberley I was thinking the same thing at about mile 13....but I am sure if I'd had a week off before the long run I would have cruised around...so I guess it's hard to compare a long run when you have done a marathon pace the day before, and trained all week etc, with what you will meet marathon day after a 3 week taper....(well that's what I'm banking on).

Some good results, some indifferent over the weekend. Aldiara - great to see. 10 miles is terrific, you should be very proud of how far you have come in a short space of time. Dan hope the shins heel up soon mate. If you know a massuer - or soemone with strong thumbs, get them to rub under your shins. It was the most pain I have ever been in, but I havent had a problem for five years - he says touching every bit of wood near him.

Simmo - probably looking at 3.05-3.15. I did 3.42 last year. I dont do a lot of races, but I have done a 14km and a half this prep, both at 4.30min/km pace, both on hilly courses. I have 3 months to improve that average up to full distance. My training is varied - consists of a long run on the weekend which I am slowly building up - This week was a shorter one, but I am at about 25km at the moment. I have my two speed sessions during the week, and I will start with another shorter quicker run. ALso riding 160-200km a week on my commute, and I have no doubt that is making a difference.

Had a pretty easy day today only doing about 4.5. Lately I'm walking a fine line in my training for a marathon due to a recurring problem I've had with my IT band in my knee. I didnt have any pain today so hopefully it stays like that.

gfinkelde, thanks for the advice. Just to clarify, you said rub under my shins? Like closer to my ankles? or toward my calves? or deep-tissue pressure on the tibialis anterior (shin muscle)?  At this point, I'm willing to try anything. I had shinsplints really bad while I was in the Army. The only way I could fix it was to not run for a few months (not really an option at this point, already paid for Chicago).Thanks. Dan

I too had severe shin splints for months - never known pain quite like it.  I think it may have come on in my case from trying to do too much too soon, and not having enough rest days inbetween. It felt like muscle growing and no where for it to go (if that makes sense).  Found myself a good sports therapist, probably saw him 2 months on and off.  he used a form of pressure points and would "rub" between the shin bone & muscle (if that makes sense) even that was very painful.   I also massaged my shins, took Epsom salt baths, iced - everything I can think of, plus LOTS of strecting.  Thankfully no problems since.

Good luck - I know how annoying and painful it can be!

Yeah Dan, sorry. What FBP said is what I had done to me. Between the shins and the calf. I had it done rubbing down, and you can feel the little bubbles beneath the shins. It hurt like hell while he was doing it, hurt like hell for a day or so, but havent had an issue since. Dont know it that is the recommnded treatment but it has worked for me and a couple of mates

gfinkelde - that sounds like a great time to be aiming for.  My best ever was 3:24:10 and that was around 15 years ago.  Here's hoping you can stay consistent with your training and you should hit the mark!  I still haven't decided on the 10k or the 1/2.  Another couple of weeks and i should be able to make an informed choice.  Either way, it'll be just for a finish, no great times will be forthcoming.

Today's run was a little over 5k at about 5:45 / km.  Nothing particularly stunning.

Ran between 7 and 8 miles on Saturday. Not sure exactly it was a trail run...I think I prefer the open road. I had to walk in too many spots to avoid tree roots, etc. Pretty though! I am just happy I went the distance! Ran my first 5k last thursday. Even though I was slow, I wasn't last! :) Did 4 "easy" miles today. (never thought I'd say that!) I'll be adding an additional day of running this week...no more sleeping in....ugh!

Nice one Pappypage! That's an awesome time!

KDogg- I went shopping for shoes yesterday (I hate shopping) and ended up with some Saucony Grid Excursion 2's which it appears are trail runners (I do hit the trails but mainly road) although the guy swore that they were really well cushioned and great shoes. My 2nd choice would have been the New Balance 661 - any thoughts? Do you think the grid excursion will be okay

Another little question - I can't pace myself! When I am running I can only perceive three settings - easy, fast and sprint. Yesterday I actually wrote my mile markers on my hand with the hope of keeping a track on my time. Only I sweat so much that the info came off my hand. Does anyone have any suggestions of how best to learn paces? Or should I just go with permanent marker next time? : )

Have a great week guys - rest day for me today - maybe some kickboxing - then running again tomorrow but going to take an easy 2 weeks before the race.

Ok got to catch up my weekend training....

Saturday-8 miles. I finished in 1 hour 23 minutes...a little over 10 minutes per mile...which is about the time I'm supposed to be running for my long runs. Only problem is I had to walk a quite a few times. I think I was a bit dehydrated during the run. I probably drank 4 or 5...maybe 6 glasses of water after running. And of course looking back, I dont' remember drinking much water during the day before running. (it was in the mid 90's as well...that probably didn't help)

Sunday-3 miles. Ran a nice easy recovery pace, and finished around 27 minutes.

Today-20 minutes weight training, and 40 minutes on the stair master for crosstraining.

xxemmaxx, Great job on increase of your stamina. Keep at it!

SimmoT, I was expecting to be really sore yesterday, the day after my 16 miler, but it was not that bad at all. And today I was eager to run again. Because I have stretched Higdon's 18 week plan to 20 weeks this will be a step back week for me so we won't be on the same week. I won't be going 17 miles for my long run this week. I plan to do 4 mi today, 8mi Tues, 12 mi Wed, Rest Thurs., 4 Fri, and run my home town's 5K on Sat, rest on Sun. I can't remember when your marathon is. Mine is Oct 11th.

aldiara88, I did a half last fall (my first ever long race) and I know what you mean about nervous. Just stick with your plan and you'll do fine. My goals have always been (1) avoid injury with conservative training (2) finish the race (3) a finish time the is well within my capabilites . . . oh yeah, and HAVE FUN keeping in mind all the great benefits of staying fit and the comaraderie of the running family.

Did 4 miles on a track today. The rubberized surface was easy on the feet compared to pavement and the dirt/gravel roads I normally run on. First time I have run on a track for training. It was nice to keep an eye on my pace. LexB, maybe this would help you with "learning" a medium pace. I did 2 miles at a comfortable which turned out to be about 8:15/mile, pushed for the next mile with a conscious effort to increase leg turn over a bit, and the pace was about 7:45. Took it easy for next 3 laps (3/4 of mile) and then pushed the last lap (1/4 mile). Final time was 32 minutes, then walked a lap. Felt good to push for a mile and to be able to recover falling back into a comfortable pace and feel that I could keep running a long way if I had wanted to.

Took an easy day today only doing 3.25 at about 6:42 pace since I'm doing my long run tomorrow. Felt good, and not too much pain in my IT band.

LexB, I have a similar problem with pacing myself. As hard as I try I always end up going at a faster pace than I would like which makes my longer runs a little more difficult. What I have ended up doing is picking out landmarks that are around where the mile markers would be on my runs since writing it on my hand would also not work. It gives me a decent estimate, as long as I dont have too many landmarks to remember. If I find I'm running too fast in the first few miles I try to force myself to slow down, though I've found that takes a lot of concentration.

lexb ,  i used to hav problems keeping my pace over winter when i was running on an ancient treadmill.i wanted to keep track of my pace and progress,so what i did was too pick out some "songs" that keep a good solid rythm, and then i would run to that beat to keep a consistent pace, and on a couple "snow free" days i went to the track and ran laps using the different songs and timed my pace..its corny, but ever since, when i run i start the first mile with a "known" song  (which is also a known pace), and then can adjust during my runs with others to increase or decrease my pace,.i dont use an ipod its just in my head, but it also helps me to "dis-associate" while on my long runs,.

rememberely is right aldira88, i ran my first 1/2 this may, actually it was my first race ever, i was so nervous,.but after the first mile you just settle in and will be grinnin from ear to ear, just concentrate on finishing and enjoying the race and  the people there with you,. its a HUGE rush,

remebereley i know you are running hartford,. and i am runnin steamtown  pa on oct 14,. but which marathon are you running simmoT ?.

i will  be doing 17 mile this sun,for my long,.and then a quick local 5k race next weekend,. after that no more races till marathon, i want last 2 months of concentrated training with no other distractions.

and thx to all for the great advice and support here!.

a rare day off for me - I'm not real excited about it, but I gotta follow the master plan here and not be obsessed with running high mileage...its come time to change the point of my training to get some quality running in here and get ready to run fast in the fall

LexB - the Excursion should be okay for you. It has decent cushioning and does have a trail bottom (I'm not sure about the upper of the shoe though). For someone in your position (neutral gait, not obese) then I think the shoe will serve its purpose just fine. This shoe might wear down a bit quicker than a slightly more expensive shoe, but please keep me up to date on that as I'm not extremely familiar with this particular model

I've now taken a full week off running trying to get the knees to quit b******g at me. Sounds like everyone else is going strong. Gotten in a couple of nice long bike rides including about 35 miles this evening. I had been looking forward to a nice long group ride Saturday, but decided that I didn't want to table with a thunderstorm.

Burgalurg - sounds like your mom had the right idea sending you to the med tent at your race. Those sound like classic symptoms of heat exhaustion. You don't want to mess with that. once you blow your heat regulatory system, you cna get in big trouble fast.

thanks for the advice rememberly and pappypage - And congrats on your 15k time. That's awesome!!=) Can't wait till Aug 10th!! We'll be running along Lakeshore up in Chicago so I'll probably take my camera too. My husband will be testing for the IL state police up in Chicago this Saturday and my training schedule has me doing 12 miles this Saturday, so I may just run the actual race day course( well most of it). It'll be nice to see some water. schedule called for 20 minutes today - just did it after class, actually ran for 15:40 without stopping to walk. I think the longest I've ever gone before is like 7 minutes. score!!! i think its all psychological with my running breaks tho. i'll have to keep working on that - but for now I'm very pleased.

Normally I run in the mornings but after watching Cadel Evans in the TDF last night live, I thought I'd go tonight with a day off tomorrow.  Covered 8k and took over 50min to do it.  Threw in a few walks so that my legs can live to fight another day.

Ran 7 miles today at a comfortable pace, finished in 64 minutes. In reviewing my running journal I noticed that I have lost 15 lbs. since I started training for the half-marathon I ran last October. I began building miles in March of '07 when I weighed 177, now I am down to 162. This is the weight I was in college, so although I had not put on a lot of weight since then (I'm 45 yrs. old), running has helped me lose the little I had gained and kept me from putting on more. Also, my family has a history of heart disease/attacks (one of my brothers had a heart attack in his early 40s). So, I will never win a race or even be in the front of the pack, but I everyday I have run and continue to stay fit by running I win. So, everyone . . . keep going and if the joints can't take it, then get a bike!

I have redeemed my running confidence after my bad race Saturday.  I ran 10 miles yesterday with the baby in the stroller.  I made it fun for both of us and stopped to look at the scenery (horses, birds, streams), but didn't "have to" stop at all.  It took us a little under two hours, so it was a nice, long, stress relieving, fun run.  I'm back in the game...got my running head back on! Rememberly, way to go on that weight loss. I've really plateaued on losing weight. I've lost around 20 lbs, but most of that was prior to Feb. I can't seem to lose the little bit more that I would like to lose(my BMI is just barely in the normal range).

congrats on the weight remembereley, thats great,  i hav plateaued too  junkie_99, stuck at 190 and it doesnt seem to budge,.i need to drop 20 lb more but it is going really slow.

tried my new , new balance 859's today.. sweeet,. much better then the nb 892's i hav been using.

new balance rep at race last week recommended these for my foot type and running form.  what a big difference. i never knew there was such a difference in shoes.

i was sent to west virginia today and there weren't any good roads to run except this 3/4 mile 12% grade hill,. and the truck stop parkin lot,.so i did a 25 min hill work out,(up and down 3 times). and then 25 mins of wind sprints (around 100 meters each, thru truck stop parkin lot)..not much fun but at least i got a workout in. .... and few crazy looks from 400 lb plus truck drivers..lol..guess i dont fit the typical truck driver stereotype.Sealed

elbeeble - hey man, whereabouts are you in terms of 5k speed? you are putting in some solid runs and I'd have to guess you are pretty fast. And as far as your ITB issue is concerned, could you tell me what shoes you are wearing? Its my guess that your shoes might be the issue

yea pappypage - if you overpronate a lot (which I guess you do if the NB rep recommended a 859 for you) then the 859s are sweet. They are super cushioned and have a high level of stability

12/8 double for me. In the morning I did three miles up, five miles down and a four mile tempo.  The tempo was a real disappointment for me, I ran 5:25, 5:30, 5:35, 5:30, which is okay because it wasn't an all out run or anything, but I was thinking I'd be able to hold 5:20s for at least six miles really easily. Luckily, its only my first structured workout back and I have three months to get to where I want to be.

took sunday off, did 10 on monday and 10 again today. I will probably do a fartlek tomorrow and save doing a tempo till next week or maybe even the week after that. I'm kinda anxious to get my first tempo in cause i wuld like to see where i'm at but at the same time i'm a little scared of the possible disappointment like kdogg just had.

Run club tonight - we had a cross training / fitness / drill session - quite nasty! But quite good fun at the same time. Lots of core stuff, some hills, upper body, etc...

Bit disappointed I didn't get to properely try out my new shoes!! Kdogg - THANK YOU for all your help and advice - you rock, you really do! For your info - the shoes are so far so good- they felt a lot firmer than they did in the store, man did they stick to the pavement tho - wow, you can hear them 'squelching' - it's like wearing suction cups!! So far so good - not totally in love like I was with the w1062's (BUT I got more money in my last pay check than I thought and after this race there is the 1/2 marathon so I am going to save up and get them in a month or so!) they're not exactly uncomfortable, just different. Will do a pace /tempo run tomorrow and let you know how they are working out.

Thanks for the input on the pacing!

Exkiwi - I don't have a dog but I am about to start 'borrowing' one from the local animal shelter when I go running! They get a nice trip out and some attention, I get some company and my dog fix!

pappypage: I'd love to see the looks you get doing your sprints at the truck stop! Planned to run 12 miles today, but only did 7. My legs (hamstrings) felt a bit tight so I decided to give my body a bit of a break. Rest tomorrow, probably do 7 on Friday and a 5K race on Saturday

Didnt run for 2days and then did a 35min run/walk, increasing my time. Managed to get up 3mins running twice at the end, felt I could have done more, but I keep reading not to do too much too soon. Consciously tried to run 'heel to toe', as I have been told running as I was (on the balls of my feet) would do me a lot of damaged, despite it feeling easier!

3 easy miles today, as I had a running partner I ran his pace at about 1 min. per mile slower than I usually would.

xxemmaxx, I think most people would tell you to land mid-foot, rather than on the heel. Check through the forums, and maybe with a running coach or doctor that runs to make sure it's best for you.

Did 3.17 miles before work this morining. =) I'm beat, but we're half way through the week.

ex-k1w1: I take my black lab with me on all my weekday runs. He's good for about 3 miles. That's when he starts needing me to motivate him! LexB: its awesome that you borrow pups for your runs. I bet they love to see you coming for them. Hope everyone has a great wednesday!! Cool

I am new to this forum.   I started running last year because I gained a ton of weight.  It has been in interesting experience.  I was up to 30 miles a week, then stopped running for  3 months. Boy was that a mistake.   Now, I am trying to get back into the swing of things and it is very difficult.

I see a few people in the forum are experiencing weight loss plateaus.  Does anyone have a solution? I have been stuck at my current weight for weeks.

I ran 3.3 miles today and it felt like my back was going to give out.  I think I need to work on strenthening my lower back.  But overall, felt great to get in some miles before work.  Shooting for hitting at least 10 miles this week.

The great news is that I finally convinced the hubby to run with me, so I have a new running partner!

    Have a great day all!

Well, KDogg, not sure if it is the new shoes, or the hard training or just pure fluke, but today I dragged my butt out of the house for a morning run. Wasn't sure about going at first as my knee was a little sore - and well frankly I was feeling very lazy. But I thought I nice little run with some trails would be fun so went out for one of  my usual shorter routes. 3.84 miles was aiming for a tempo run at about 40mins or so.  Instead I did it in 31'19'' (8.10 pace) which I think is my all time best (?). I realise that's an easy pace for some people on this forum but hey, we all gotta start somewhere right?! I was just steaming along and loving it - BRILLIANT fun! Very happy bunny today! just had a nice cold shower (was quite hot) and a big bowl of yoghurt, banana, granola and honey as a reward!  : )

Brooklyngrrl - the advice I received when I first started was to not concentrate on the weight loss but focus on your training. As your training steps up the weight will begin to come off as your body sorts itself out at it's own pace. Also take it slow - don't go crazy on mileage or you'll burn out/lose momentum again.  Weight/strength training (esp. core and upper body) will help no end with running and with weight loss (well fat loss - building muscle may mean you don't 'lose' weight).

cool- I need this. I've been running since February and have hit a valley. Have built up to 6 to 8 miles on long days and do 4-5 mid week. Did 8 miles on the NCR trail Saturday and felt great. Went out today and had to stop at 3.5.  I felt fine was just not motivated. It sucked....

LexB - dang girl, thats a really good run

I ran a 15 mile medium long run today (starting at 5:45 am...uggggggh). I started with a couple of my teammates. Then I met up with a female friend and ran with her for a couple miles and then I ran a couple more miles on my own.

I'm gonna come back with an easy five miles this evening
