Just 4.5 miles today - interval training.  Didn't feel as strong this AM as expected so I ran, a 1/2 mile warm up,  4 x 1/4miles each at 90s with 1/16 mile walk in between, 4 x 1/2 miles - first 2 at a 7:30pace, second 2 at 7:00pace - each with an 1/8 mile walk in between and a little cool down at the end.

I went over to the track to do some aerobic threshold work. Kinda lame to do mile repeats at aerobic threshold pace, but I don't want to do anything too hard while still recovering from the half.

    4x1600 (5:32, 5:26, 5:36, 5:36) and 1x3200 (11:20) all with 1:00 rest in between

Nothing too hard, I just went over there in my trainers and ran what felt moderately hard (but not quite tempo pace). I ran in my trainers instead of flats, which made things a bit slower. Also, I REALLY didn't want to go out and run...50 degrees (I hate cold), 15-20 mph wind and rain, ugh.

Did a fartlek today, 10x(1min hard/easy followed by 30s hard/easy) so 30min total. Plus warm up and down of course. It was pretty warm today, probably mid 80's, and really dry as always. We did the run on the 1mile loop around our rec center on campus so we had plenty of spectators to keep us motivated. You've got to show off for all the girls walking to class right? lol We always get some funny looks when 10-15 guys fly by in nothing but tiny shorts or half-tights. Anyway it was a pretty decent run, not great. The pace felt smooth and the legs were a little tired but that was expected.

fricster; gfinkelde - I'll be there, camera in hand. Looking forward to saying g'day!

Got 8km in yesterday, easy pace. my easy run pace is edging ever so slowly towards 5:00 per km.  Currently around 5:10 - 5:15.  Today I did 22mins w/up and 22 mins w/dn with 2 lots of 12 mins tempo with 3 mins recovery.  Covered 14.5km and felt really good.  Looking forward to my 12km Time Trial on Sat for an educated guess at my half time.

I'd like to jump in.  Ran the Philly Distance Run week before last - my first half after knee surgery earlier this year.  I need to stay motivated, but I'm not sure what my next race will be.  Did 3.5 hill work on the TM last night and joined the 100 miles/month challenge today.

2x 3.08mile laps today in 41:24 (6:43 pace). Didn't get out for a long run on wednesday as the weather here is totally sucky at the moment. Planned to do more miles tonight but the rain was so depressin I just decided enough was enough after the 2nd lap. Fingers crossed that tomorrow brings no rain...

Simmo - will aim at 3.15, so will probably aim to get in that group. My speed to stay ahead of that group will be fine, but with the injury I doubt I will have the endurance to go all the way with them. Hoepfully I can get up to 38km before the trouble starts!!!

9 days to go. two games of cricket in the meantime, a couple of lgiht runs to get the blood flowing. I will stay off the bike next week to freshen up the legs - but also dont want to risk having an off!!!

you guys are nuts. 50 degrees is cold!! Sure its great for running fast, and if I wanted to race fast I would want it to be 40 degrees or so, but not for daily training, I would rather not have to wear a long sleeve shirt. Not to mention wind and rain - that makes for a not fun run.

I like to run shirtless, so anything 75+ is great. Maybe once you start getting over 95 then I'm not too happy, but I haven't seen a lot of 95 degree weather at the times I train.

Man pappypage, snow shoe running? I don't even want to think about that. I am gonna probably have to make a new best friend over the winter - the treadmill, ugh. Imagine putting in 100-110 miles a week on a treadmill (I'm gonna bump my mileage back up during the winter when I'm just doing easy miles), thats gonna suck, but oh well.  But I dunno, they say it doesn't get really icy up here, there is just a lot of snow, so we'll see how it turns out.

I ran an easy 15 miles today, but it wasn't easy at all, haha. I felt terrible!!!! I haven't felt that bad on an easy run for a long time, I was almost gonna stop and walk on the last couple miles, but I decided that'd probably be a bad idea.  I'll probably take another easy run tomorrow and then hop on the track Saturday (even though I hate to wake up early and will have to deal with crazy traffic for the game)

    SimmoT - I always get really nervous when I'm standing at the starting line waiting for the gun to go. It doesn't matter if it's a 5k, 10k, half marathon or a marathon. Self-doubt starts to creep in and I start to let stupid things into my head like;

Have I put in enough miles/hours training to do myself justice?

Have I ate too soon before the start. Have I drank too much water? Oh God, what if I get bloated?

Should I really be standing this close to a dude wearing pink running skins?

I guess it's the same for everybody. I'm new to the whole experience so it's still really exciting as well as nerve-racking. Once I get started though and find my pace, I'm grand.

KDogg - 100+ miles a week on a treadmill...There's no way I could hack that at all (physically or mentally). You must be immune to boredom

Can't believe the sun is actually out today - looking forward to a run this evening after work.

Another easy 5 miles today.  I can't wait to start incorporating real training workouts into my routine...ie: tempo runs and speed workouts....but..I can see the endurance is building up quite nicely.  I find myself really missing my run on the mornings i don't head out there...I never thought i'd feel that!

    This sunday i'll do a 30 or so bike ride as my xtrain..and then Tuesday I attempt..dun dun dun.....the 6 mile...lol  :)

    Chiggy...Good luck on your run!!!

KDogg...I have to agree with Gilly...today was...i think 65 degrees and I was wishing it were colder!!   :)  Though..I do fear the winter months ahead!

Graeme....Too much thinking!!!  where's all the fun?  I remember my coach telling me "Just have fun and You'll see how far that gets you!"

Speedwork session last night, which included a few 400m repeats and a total of four miles.  On a few of the repeats, I got into that wonderful rhythm where the legs go on auto-pilot, and the only thing you have to do is remember to breath and hold on for the ride.  Overall a good quick workout.

This Sunday is the Army Ten Miler - should be just an easy ten mile run with 26,000 other friends!  I don't have a definite time goal, but anything under 90 minutes and injury-free would be just fine with me.

Just done my long run for the week... 12 miles - HOORAH - that's the furthest I have run so far - so a new personal best in terms of distance. 1hr51mins (9:25pace). Happy with my pace (thought I was slower, felt comfortable) and the run in general. There were a couple of nasty climbs but after half way it was the downhills that hurt the most. Took my gel at 5.5miles, probably a bit early but I needed it. Felt great for a short time after, then started fading, miles 8 to 10 hurt like hell - my legs felt stiff and heavy, my hips and feet sore... just no energy. Managed to battle through and started feeling a lot better on the last mile. Perhaps because it was a nice ever so slight downhill straight stretch home. Was about 12c and overcast - threatening rain but it held off till I got in through the front door!

Feeling tired now. Just had my chocolate milk, now for a hot shower and a REALLY good stretching session!

Happy running folks! Have a good weekend

LexB - Congratulations on your longest run so far!!  You even ran through a few quitting points, I see.  I've noticed something strange.  Often when feeling bad through a stretch of a few miles, literally picking up the pace a little feels better for me than the slower pace.  Then after a little while, I'll settle back down, feeling much better.  I don't understand it, but I've also read about this in Jack Daniel's book on running.

Again, great run!  Vancouver should be ideal conditions for running this time of year.

3x 3.08mile laps today in 1:03:50 (6:54 pace). Our weather is pretty cold at the moment - about 45 - didn't stop me donning my running shorts and hitting the great outdoors.

Thanks SimmoT - I'm trying to work on my pace a bit - spice things up a bit.

Well done on the 12-miler LexB - What kind of energy gel do you use? Is it nice? I tried the Carb-Boom strawberry & kiwi and it is god awful. I ordered some 'Honey Stinger' gels that should be here tomorrow and I hope to goodness they aint as bad.

Tranquil - lol, yeah I guess it is meant to be fun first and foremost:) Its so easy to look past that at times and forget that you're doing it mainly for the pure enjoyment of running. Enjoy your bike ride.

Gilly - Yep, I found it easier to pick up the pace a bit through the 'dark' patches, going slower just made everything hurt more, I also found it helped to sing out loud with my music - probably to the disapproval of anyone within ear-shot : )

Graeme - I used a strawberry and banana powerbar gell and it was disgusting! I bought two of them a week ago - that was my second and last. Let me know what the honey stinger is like - that sounds nice. I'm steering clear of fruit flavours.

Hey guys!! Been a while (ok, a really, really long while)!! I'm pretty much done all my training for the Chicago Marathon. Man, has it been a trial. This summer was spectacularly tough to run in. I'm with the crowd, here, KDogg, I ran 8 miles tonight, and it was probably low 50's- high 40's, and I just loved it. Ran faster than I have in a really long time, despite not being well-hydrated.

Only about 9 days to go till the big day!! As I recall, there are a bunch doing the Melbourne Marathon on the 12th as well. Good luck to all. The only thing I really have to do before the race is pack and talk to my colleague's widow (for those that don't know, I worked with the police officer that passed away while running last year's Chicago Marathon). I'm going to ask her for the honor of carrying his badge while I run, in memory of his effort last year. Wish me luck, everyone.

dan - I was JUST going to ask where you had been, haha. Good to hear your training is going alright.

I stand by my earlier statement that I much rather have 75-95 degree temps for running. I don't know how you guys look forward to going out in the cold even if you do know you are gonna be getting warmed up quickly. Right now it is taking all of the motivation I have to get out the door to run. If I didn't have big goals, I probably would only be running three days a week or something right now.

I ran 12 miles tonight at night, again, it sucked getting out the door. Once I got going I was rolling, I actually felt great. So today was a complete reversal from yesterday, which is a nice thing.

Tomorrow is my birthday, I'm gonna be turning 24, so I guess I gotta run 24 miles...track workout in the morning with a LONG cooldown and then I'll have to double back in the evening for some shorter miles.

dan!! - good to hear from you again.  Very pleased to hear the training has been going well.

Gels - My local health shop only carries one gel; it happens to be the Endura citrus flavour and I used it a couple of weeks ago on a 2.5 hr run.  Very easy to take, nice flavour.  I've got a 2hr 40 run planned for next weekend and will try it again then and let you know how I found it.

For all those in the final week of a taper before the BIG one next Sunday; if your legs are screaming at you to do some work, that's a really good sign!  Don't blow it now!  Harro8 - if you're still there and looking for some moral support next Sunday, let me know your race number and I'll look out for ya with a cheer!

I'm 4 weeks out from my half and feeling good.  I finally got into a groove on my easy runs this week and found a rhythym that allowed me to run comfortably at my 70% heart rate while still edging closer to that magical (for me) 5:00 min per km pace.  This morning was the Tan Time Trial day.  My training plan called for a 10 - 15km race this weekend so I tacked an extra 4km lap onto the 8km official run.  I think I have finally found my racing legs as I got into a groove again which felt like I used to in the last couple of seasons of running with my club back in New Zealand before I migrated to Oz back in late '99.  I timed my 8km 2s faster than last month and held that pace for another 4km to hit 12km in a touch over 53 minutes.  That's 4:25 per km.  It's still not quite the 4:15 I need to crack 90 minutes for the half but it's getting there.

    Run On!

    ps: Happy Birthday KDogg!

KDogg - I just have to ask one last time.  Are you truly saying you would rather go out and run in 95 degrees rather than 50 degrees???  Don't you realize that the exercising human body is far better designed to handle cold than heat?  When you exercise, you add internal heat to any heat being imposed by the external environment.  With the proper clothing we can exercise and perform quite well when the ambient temperature is many degrees below our own body temperature, but our bodies have a difficult time surviving in an environment that's just a few degrees above normal body temperature.  For a runner, particularly a distant runner, heat is enemy #1.

I ran a great 15-mile long run this morning.  Oh, the joy of running.  Afterwards I did something I rarely do..."treated" myself to an ice bath.  My legs felt so much better afterwards.  What is it about those ice baths?  I guess the inflamation is reduced.  Either way, felt really refreshed.

"I always loved running...it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs." Jesse Owens

    Happy Running!!!

Ran the Grete Gallop half marathon this morning.  I completed in 2hrs and 20 mins.  Much, much better than most of the half marathons I had ran during the year.  The cool temperature did contribute to me running stronger and faster.  I cut 10 mins off my previous half marathon times.

Good look Chiggy and Bonzi with your races.

Got out on my bike for a 43 mile ride today. First excersize of any sort in 2 weeks. Work has been crazy busy and I've felt exhausted. Legs felt a bit leaden, but it was good to get out.

KDogg - Man, you picked the wrong way to move if you like it hot. You moved up from Evansville to South Bend (or was it Terre Haute?) You've moved 2 USDA hardiness zones north (my wife is a big time gardener.) that means you can expect low temps about 10-20 degrees colder than what you were used to. And I'm thinking you are going to hate the words "lake effect snow".

LexB - Congrats on the long run

Steve - Congrats on the medal. Your 5K times are a couple of minutes more than what I ran for 2.5 when I ran XC 30 yrs ago.

    KDogg

thanks kiwi for the bday wishes :)

Gilly - you are taking my comment to the extreme. I said once you start getting over 95 degrees, then I might not like it that much. I would read that in such a way as to 95 is the maximum tolerable temperature. Furthermore, seeing as I had said I don't see a lot of 95 degree temps at the times I run says I do run at a time when its not gonna be 95.

That said, I will stress again that if I want to run fast I want it to be 40-50 degrees or maybe even a little cooler. Your physiological argument backs up my reasoning for that seeing as your body uses less energy for thermoregulation in cool temps and thus you are able to use that energy in ways to benefit your running.  However, I don't want to run fast every day, I just want to run fast when it matters - races.

For me, 50 degrees is cold, I have no insulation, my body fat is probably 3%, maybe a little higher. So getting motivated to go run in 50 degree weather and 20 degree weather is almost the same for me - it sucks either way.I realize you can wear layers and all of that great stuff Runners World informs runners to do, but none of that changes the fact that when step out the door its still cold and you are still going to feel cold...if you aren't, then you are a overdressed which is a problem in itself.

Also, some runners handle heat a little better than others.  I run well in the heat. The first time I ever ran a half marathon, I was VERY undertrained (I had had six weeks of training - I had taken six months completely off of running prior to that) and it was 95-100 degrees. Everyone run slow (4-6 minutes slower than they did the year prior). However, despite being undertrained I beat a ton of runners I shouldn't have because they suffered way more than me due to the heat. My 5k PR - I ran on a hot day. This summer, in 90 degree heat and 95% humidity I ran a 15:40 5k by myself. My point being, I don't think the heat affects me as much as it does others and I like it that way because its human nature to have an affinity for things you do well in.

For distance runners the number 1 enemy is motivation. For me, its hard to get motivated to run in the cold, I just don't like it. So to answer your question, yes I would prefer it to be warmer than 50 degrees every day except for race days. For me, probably 75-80 degrees would be excellent.

rpetreccajr - you're exactly right lol. I wanted to move south, but aside from Texas and Vanderbilt there aren't really any national law schools in the south. Texas was unwilling to give me a free application (whereas EVERYONE else did), so I didn't bother applying to Texas. Vandy's admission statistics this year were phenomenal, so guys like me got the shaft despite having solid admissions numbers.

Wow - what a long lead up. Anyway, I ran a track workout this morning. I felt terrible, I couldn't breathe and I don't know why. I was gonna do 2400s (for my 24th bday), but I couldn't maintain my pace for half that distance, so I had to back off and do some shorter stuff. I did 2x(1200, 1000, 800) with 2:00 rest in between reps and then 4x400 starting a 400 every 2:00. I tried to keep everything around 5:00 pace, my 8k total time was 24:58, so not too far off of what I want my actual 8k race time to be...I'll take that on an off day :) I gotta run another 7 miles this evening to give me 24 for the day

I'm interested to see how chiggy describes his race.

KDogg - Thanks for the explanation.  If you are doing PR's in 90 degree weather and 95% humidity, clearly your physiological makeup is different from most people's, which explains why I can't relate.  I have the solution: move here to Florida and your problems will be over, man!  You'll get all the heat and humidity your soul (and body) desires.

    Happy Birthday!!

just to clarify, 15:40 isn't my PR, it was just an example of a decent effort in hot weather. I would certainly run my fastest in cooler weather...my point is just that I lack motivation when its cooler and running is useless when you don't do it.

I wish I could move to Florida, if UF's law school application wasn't such a hassle to fill out and they were more generous with scholarships for out of state people they seriously would have been one of my top choices. thanks for the bday wishes :)

7 more easy miles - wow I'm tired...and I gotta wake up for a long run tomorrow morning, suck

    Hi All,

Lots of great posts recently, Great Work Lex B on a PR for distance, Ericjacqui - excellent time for your Half - you must be feeling really great in those runs now, getting lots of experience - it will be the 26mi for you in no time - if I can- anyone can!!

    Congrats Steve on your medal!

Gilly - I have been using the Port Phillip Bay to have the equivalent of an ice bath after each of my long runs. The sea water is freezing in Melbourne in Winter - I get lots of strange looks as I walk into the water with my bathers, wooly jumper, beanie and scarf on - but those 15-20mins with cold numb legs make a world of difference.

Dan.Keeler - what an inspiration to drive you through the race on the 12th - I will be thinking of you and your friend as we run here in Melbourne.

Ex-Kiwi, you are so right about the leg energy, I ran 12kms yesterday, and was so cranky when we stopped - cos I really wanted to keep on going - it was about an hour too short for me. I am going to be unbearable by the end of the week. I am off to Sydney for two days on business - my family will no doubt be pleased to escape me going mad with little/no running...

Happy Birthday Kdogg - hope you got a little spoilt to celebrate

Back from Leavenworth WA today.  My marathon relay team ran yesterday and we won the event (out of 31 teams)! Now admittedly it wasn't that competitive a race as our 6 person team won with a time of 3:16:05.  Nonetheless, we did well and I held up my end of the deal with a 4.6 mile leg at a pace of about 7:45/mile. Also, as this is only the second race I've run since I was about 16, it was nice to win (or at least to be competitive).   Overall, the team pace was 7:29 so my 7:45 pace was not that far off the average and I was the oldest one on the team by at least 10 years and probably 15.

My pace was a bit slower than I had hoped for.  My splits were also a bit odd. Since I was in leg 5 I didn't have even mile markers but I got my split at about 1.5 miles and every mile there after.  I ran the first 1.5 at a roughly 7:21 pace, the next mile in 7:46, the next in 8:38 and the last in 7:38.  I have a feeling the mile markers were not evenly spaced as others who ran the same leg indicated that the 3rd mile seemed "long" for them too.  Sure it had a little uphill at the end, but it had a similar downhill at the beginning so I doubt my time was THAT bad during that mile.  I had a good time and was able to pass a couple of the other relay teams on my leg and hand off to leg 6 with us in the lead by a few minutes.  Our last runner turned in splits that were around 6 even and extended our lead considerably. I had a great time and we all partook of the Octoberfest activities afterwards (hmmmmm beer and brats....).

I was a bit sore afterwards and think it may be IT band problems.  However, I'm not sure how to tell the difference between a joint problem and muscle problem in this case as I have a new pain I haven't really experienced before.  It's located on the left side just an inch or two below the hip bone and a little backwards of the side.  Doesn't hurt too bad but I have a high tolerance for pain.  I'm about 8 weeks prior to my first half marathon and am a bit concerned about this one. E.g. I'm not sure if it's something I can just run through and it will go away (like many other pains I've experience in the past year) or if this is something that needs a different approach.

    happy belated birthday kdogg!

so...today was a bike day for me....and i think i overdid it *just* a bit....the last road i needed to get to where i was going was closed...so i didnt know how to get to my detination...so...i just started riding back....(even though i was going to take the train back adn i was only 5 miles away from the final!)  i was suppossed to do between 25-30 miles...it turned into 35.2!  plus..alot of unexpected hills....:/

by the time i got home, my quads felt like a rubber band ready to be snapped.  I stretched, iced, drank water, took in tons of protein, hot shower and massage..and luckily im feeling better....(not sure why i have so much upper body pain though)

tommorrow i take a day off and tuesday, im supposed to up to running 6 miles.....we'll see how the quads feel...im expecting waking up tommorrow to not be so friendly...:/

Ran the Army Ten Miler yesterday with 18,556 other finishers!  Weather was a perfect 58 degrees at the start and didn't get too much hotter by the finish.  The Army always does a great job with the race, and all of the volunteers and the water stations were perfect.

My goal was to finish anywhere under 1:30, so I was pretty pleased with my final time of 1:25:19, which comes out to an 8:32 per mile pace.  I actually ran the last 3.5 miles at about 8 minute pace.  The best part of the run was that it was completely comfortable as I get ready for the marathon in three weeks.  I realize that the marathon is 2.5 times what I did yesterday, but my goal of a four hour marathon seems within reach.

ericjacquie - congrats on a fine race.  Isn't it nice to improve and get better?

dan - best of luck to you on Sunday.  I'll be rooting for you and your fallen colleague.

The OSU race this weekend went fairly well i think given the terrain. It was a fun course with the first and 4th miles kindof flat and all the others with non-stop short and steep hills. They put a lot of really soft mulch over every hill which slowed them down even more. I ran 26:02 for 8k, which is about 5:13 pace. The first mile went out much slower than expected, the leaders were taking it easy so everyone else did also, we came across at 5:05. After that some teammates and I settled into a nice rhythm for the next 2 and came through 5k at 16:10. The last 3k I expected to die every time there was a hill but when i got to the top i felt just fine. I probably should have pushed harder earlier and came through 5k under 16min if not even faster, which would have put me with a faster pack going into the last 3k. I might have died but from the way i was felt i think i still could have held good pace. Overall a pretty good race, and it will give me something to build off of.

Easy run yesterday and a 7 mile tempo this morning that did not go well. The first 2 miles were at 5:15 which may have been a little fast but not enough so to warrant the 5:40's i hit later, aaack!

around 19 miles last night in about 3 hours...final long run until the marathon...under 3 weeks away. I wasn't happy with the run, but I'm hoping the number of pretty serious hills I get to run on will make up for my unhappiness...LOL. Taper time...I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself the final week with very little running to do.

Bonzi, congrats on your Army 10miler. I tried to sign up, but got to the registration too late....hopefully next year I'll be there.

Great to have you back Dan. It was an inspriing story when I started posting here many moons ago, and it still is. Hope you put in a good one, but he would be proud of you no matter what.

     Have birthday Doggman.

Here we go 5 days to go. Saturday did a medium run, to get a few miles in before next week, but to work on my technique mainly, which had suffered during my lay off. i have recovered nicely from it since and feel good now. Body is ready to go. Forecast at this early stage looks hot 28c which is about 10c hotter than last year which felt hot then. Fluids have started going in now!!

Will post later on in the week. I was feeling fine nerves wise until I started reading all the posts. Am sure I will be fine come race day

Last dual meet of the season went pretty well today.  Weird course though       (3.04 miles)  Went out to fast, as usual (5:32) and couldnt maintain the pace.  Ended up running a 17:53 which is around 5:52 pace.  I wish this was a full 5k though i would have probably p.r'ed.  If i kept that pace for the full 5k it would have been around and 18:16 5k.  Im so angry! Well anyways, have an invitational at darlington park (the place with a total of 400m of running on sand, ew) but overall its pretty flat so it should be a good race, hoping for a p.r.

I feel a bit envious knowing that so many of you are racing this weekend, and I'm not racing for another month!

8k easy yesterday.  Today was Hammer Time!  22 mins warm up and warm down, then 7 * 800m repeats with 400m recoveries.  Aiming for 3:08 - 3:24 800's and actually did (3:13, 3:14, 3:13, 3:10, 3:11, 3:13 and 3:17).  That last one was done with the dreaded bear on my back, absolutely could not get my legs to turn over any faster.  Still, felt good to hold a consistent pace for the first 6 and not be too far behind on no. 7.  I haven't done serious 800 repeats for about 10yrs, and my legs are protesting!

Hi All, Getting a bit worried about the temp on Sunday, a bit hotter than I am used to  -so like gfinkelde I am starting to hydrate now! Also eating too much - must watch that - too much time on my hands. Ran a very short 6kms tonight. easy ...
