Hi Margaret
I also am in my 50s and walk. I tried running a bit but its too hard on my knees and hips.I like the mapping program here because it keeps me motivated. I would rather sit!

Hi There,
I have been with Mapmywalk for a while now. Great site. I will be 60 at the end of the year and have decided I want to lose some weight and get fit by then. And hopefully stay that way! I walk about 3-4 times a week and do a minimum of 3-4 kms (I live in Australia by the way). I have done that "Walk a Marathon" in a month and made it each time. Going again for April. Need all the incentive I can get.
I have been reading about walking sticks (like Nordic sticks) and wonder if you have ever used them. If so, do they really help?
Let me know. And keep walking!

G'day,
I'm another Aussie and I'm well into the over 50s age-group.
I've just joined MayMyWalk and have a couple of walking routes mapped, but I'm still feeling my way around this site. I walk an average of 5 km a day (I think!) but I've found the distances estimated onthis are less than the distances I've measured with the car.
Late last year I had major back surgery and I discovered that walking is the best exercise for people with sore backs. Not sure about knees. Anyway, I go by the "Use it or Lose it" philosophy, which becomes a bit more important at our age.
Cheers,
I'm 52, in the UK, and recovering from major surgery 6 months ago for mastectomy and reconstructive surgery using an abdominal flap. Finish chemo soon and then have a month of radiotherapy. I've put on nearly 2 stone, have intermittent lower back pain anyway since tearing the sacro-iliac ligament 8 years ago, and with a family history of arthritis I imagine stiff and weak knees indicate this is looming. I hate feeling sluggish and am keen to get on the move again, swimming not allowed for a few months due to the risk of infection, I used to jog very lightly - 3 or 4 miles, 3 times a week - but am certainly not up to running anywhere yet and am not confident I'll run again.
My old dog has also put on weight since my enforced immobility so we both need to start gently. What I'm wondering if whether the surface makes much difference in terms of benefits or disadvantages to sore knees? Is a good shoe good regardless of whether you walk on roads, stony paths, grass or a firm beach? I'd also welcome recommendations for shoes - I currently wear Nike Flight shoes, I think originally designed for basketball, they are cut just below the ankle and are very supportive. I have wide feet and wear the outside edge of my shoes.
Good to hear from women in a similar position, thanks ladies!
HELLO KIND PEOPLE! I, too, am 52, well almost 53 as of 11.15.08 & am suffering from the beat-up knees of obesity (250) & the wear & tear of LIFE!!! too bad we're all just 'beautiful' instead of 'fleet of foot & SIMPLY PLAIN good-looking!' :0)
i'm trying 'hard' 2 get back on the road after re-injuring my achilles. don't have much endurance due 2 M.S., so i'm hoping 4 a little encouragement.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE & remember, "one STEP at a TIME"
Donna & Lucy (her under-walked canine)
Hi everyone!! Congrats to all of us over 50 who decided not to let life get us down!! I am 54 and live in Washington State. I am trying to get is shape for a half walking marathon in Seattle in June and on May 3rd,I plan on walking in the Lilac Bloomsday Run which is a 12 k or 7.46 miles www.bloomsdayrun.org. My feet hurt , my hips hurt and all my muscles have decided to fight me on this quest, but each day that I get out there and walk they do less screaming. I joind the YMCA and they have a group of walkers, runners, and run-walkers that meet two times a week. The trainer is there to help with questions and talk over any problems we might have. She also gives us the routes to walk to prepare us for the Bloomsday course. It is great way to meet other walkers. Hope everyone keeps up with the hard work, it will be well worth it in the end. Best of luck to everyone! Becky
