Does anyone know what the recommended mile life for sneakers is supposed to be? I usually just get a new pair every year but since I just got a new pair, I was planning on logging how many miles I ran in them.
I picked up new sneak's a couple of weeks ago at Marathon Sports (Mass Ave Cambridge) and they said at least 400 miles, as I recall. I'm sure I have stretched mine out longer than that.
Your best bet would be no more than 500 miles. This will really help you prevent injuries. Also, you might want to think about adding a second pair of shoes half-way through the life of your current shoes. At about 250 miles, pick up the second pair and run in them every other run. This will allow you a point of reference to know if your first pair is really to old. If you are a daily runner, it will also allow your shoes time to dry out between runs and prevent you from stretching them (which would shorten their life).
It is very important to track the number of miles and replace your shoes at the appropriate time. Otherwise, you will most likely start feeling a lot of pain in your knees and all your training will be for nothing.
I may be nuts but I think it depends on your size and your stride. I'm a lightweight at 135 - 140 and I don't pronate and land pretty much in the center of my foot. I get at least 5-6 months worth of wear on a pair of shoes. that's like 1300-1400 miles for me.
No matter what your size and stride, I don't know anyone who recommends putting more than 500 miles on a pair of shoes...700 at the very most (but personally, I wouldn't go over 500, no matter what).
I'm gonna be 53, I've averaged 200 miles a month for the last 20 years or so, never had an injury, putting at least 1000 miles on every pair of Asics. I'm cheap, and I'm sturdy I guess.
Yea, it depends on a ton of stuff. One of my best friends puts 1300+ miles on a pair of shoes and he runs 70-80 miles a week. If your body can handle this type of thing, then do it I guess. However, I think thats pretty darn risky.
I generally retire my shoes after 450 miles or so, but I'm currently playing around with a pair of Glycerin 5's. I've got 530 miles on them and only using them twice a week (for my longer runs). So far I haven't had any issues during or after the runs, so I will be interested to see how long these shoes can last.
KDogg - I'm still running in my Glycerin 5's as well, but mine only have 250 miles on them. Have you tried the Glycerin 6's? I have a pair and don't know which I like best.
Brooks sent me a free pair, but I haven't used em yet other than trying em on to make sure they fit.
From what I could tell, the Glycerin 6s were a little softer with the double stacked mogo and were perhaps a little more flexible than the 5s. Again, I haven't ran in them yet, so I can't give a fair comparison.
I'm not really picky on my shoes though, I take whatever I can get for free (or super cheap) as long as it fits and isn't corrective.
Mine usually work out to be about 500 miles. My arches and me knees start getting achy around this time, and I take that as in indication to replace the shoes. I'm not sure if achy-ness is the recommended method for determining shoe life, but it's pretty clear cut.
I agree. The guage I use is when my knees and or shins start to ache. It usually happens at about 500-600 miles. In my experience the surface on which you run can have a lot to do with the lifespan of a shoe. For instance, I mix in trail and hill runs 2 times per week and run on asphalt 4 times per week. The more I run on ashpalt, the faster my shoes wear out.
I just retired a pair of Nike Structure Triax 10's. They just reached the 300mi mark and after my last few runs, I decided it was time to retire them. I noticed on my last few runs, I've started getting shin pains again, so I went out for new shoes. Unfortunately, last time I had the pains, I ranthrough them and developed a stress fracture. B/c of that, I went ahead with a new pair. Can't hurt.
I just purchased a pair of Nike Structure Triax 11's and hopefully they'll go as long or longer.
Another thing, I'm rough w/ shoes. I overpronate and hit with a hard stride. It really doesn't take me long to flatten shoes.
I did talk with the guy at the shop who was definitely wanting me to purchase the Asics Kayano 14's b/c they go 400mi+ in their life. Too bad they didn't fit very well.
I have no idea how you people can afford to replace your shoes every 400-500 miles. With the current price of shoes it would come to over $500 a year for me just for shoes, which I can't very well afford. That free shoe thing sounds pretty nice...
Speaking of cost, my Triax 10's were $95, lasted me about 8months and wound up costing me $0.31/mile. I figure that's not too bad.
The new Triax 11's I just purchased were ony $70 and should last me close to the same as the last pair. The only other expense from running would be the occassional shirt and race fees, right?
Also, I'm not one to run 30-50mi/week either. I'm probably averaging 15-20 right now and that seem to be the comfortable medium for me.
