I've been running consistently for the past few months, after taking a LONG break from it.  I am running 4 days a week, b/w 3 and 4 miles each time.  My knees are starting to bother me, so I've decided to run on grassy surfaces for a little while, to give me knees a break and to hopefully continue to build up my leg muscles.  It's making a world of difference in how my knees feel, but running around and around the soccer field is getting a little boring, and I hope to be able to run on sidewalks again.  How long does it take to strengthen your legs so that your knees aren't taking the brunt force of the impact anymore??  Hopefully "runner's knee" is mostly a problem for beginner runners??

Definitely running on softer sufaces is easier on the knees but you may be pushing too much too soon.  Back off a bit on the mileage, slow down and make sure you have good shoes.  Most knee pain and other leg problems can be traced back to your feet.  If your pain doesn't get better you might want to see a podiatrist to have your feet looked at.  I had really bad knee and hip pain and my podiatrist had some custom orthotics built especially for my feet and my problems went away.  Also, to cure the boredom of the soccor field see if you can find some nice trails to run on to relieve the boredom of running around the soccer field.  Best of luck to you.
