TNSR: Food Desert Awareness Bike Tour
And now for something a little different and outside our usual comfort zone... Do you know what a food desert is? The hope is that by the end of this ride you will know the answer and maybe do a little something to help bring them to an end. This week we will be riding in conjunction with Seeds in the Middle. They are a group that works to mitigate food deserts in NYC by helping to create small, local gardens and by creating partnerships with businesses and individuals to help get healthy food to places where it is not readily available. We will be riding by the following locations so keep a lookout for them throughout our ride: - Screamers Vegan Pizzeria: Crown Heights farm market on Fridays, 1-6p - Weeksville Heritage Center: market on Saturday, 12-4 (opening Saturday) - PS-IS 178: farm stand and gardens started, Wednesdays 12:30-3p - Charity Baptist Church (we are starting yoga there on July 27) - Brownsville (downtown) 6-7p Yoga - Blake Avenue btw Mother Gaston/Rockaway: helping with Open Streets activities for underserved kids (Saturday afternoons) - PS 41: raising funds for another school to run farm stands - PS 109, Brownsville: new farm stand & gardens started with plans to add a chicken coop - Wednesdays, 2-5p Please remember, the pandemic isn't over. Wear masks, bring hand sanitizer and do your best to distance socially while riding and when we stop. It's best to follow the ride leader. We will do our best to stick together but please have someone’s number to call in case you get separated from the group. There are a few stretches where everyone will be invited to pedal at their preferred pace and mass up points will be called out along the route. So grab your bike, lights, lock, bell, snacks, drinks, cash, mask, camera and bring your friends!! RIDE LEADER: Enrique WHEN: Meet up at 7:00 pm, wheels down at 7:30 pm! The goals are to ride bikes and hang out with friends that love riding bikes. Feel free to contact us with any questions/concerns at SocialCyclingNYC@gmail.com CAUTION: If you like to ride ahead of the lead, please be sure to test the route for your own safety and for the safety of anyone that doesn't know the route and follows you. Feel free to ride ahead on bridges as we always mass up on the other side. WHAT YOU NEED: NYC Department of Transportation Bicycle Laws, Rules & Regulations require: White headlight and red taillight must be used from dusk to dawn, bell or other audible signal (not whistle), working brakes, and reflective tires and/or other reflective devices. Social Cycling NYC strongly recommends that every cyclist: Follows NYC DOT rules, EXPECTS all cyclists to accept personal responsibility for their own actions (or lack thereof), and recommends cyclists bring/use bikes, helmets, locks, IDs, money for food and drinks, and cycling friends! HOW: WE ride AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We don't block intersections. We are nice to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road. LISTEN TO the volunteers helping to lead the ride. They are some nice people and have your best interests in mind. If you have any questions about the rules, please check here: http://on.nyc.gov/19dsixi REMINDER: The goal is to create a safe environment for all riders, but we cannot control, nor do we desire to, every rider's behavior. We promote personal responsibility and all riders are responsible for themselves. If you choose to ride with us, then you accept the risks inherent in riding a bicycle with a large group of other people riding bicycles. - a 14.6 mi cycling route in Manhattan, New York
